ENRIQUE CIAPARA
Enrique Ciapara approaches the canvas as if it were a blank  page of poetic text. In his paintings layers of color, schematicdrawing, and script create loosely threaded narratives that employallusion and dislocation. Suggestive figures, words, and abstractscribbles—all displaced from recognizable settings—are paintedor drawn over large fields of thinly applied color. The results areindebted to the dense pictorial space and gestural expressivityof Spanish

painter Antonio Saura (1930-1998), byway of Luis Moret, the Spanish painter and teacher who held aninformal salon of Tijuana artists for a brief time during the late1980’s.In different ways, both Saura and Moret appropriatedSurrealist techniques of automatic drawing and writing andintegrated these practices into their expressionist painting. WhatCiapara does, is overlay these influences with an awareness of Cy Twombly’s graffiti transgressions. Ciapara, who distrustedhis own significant drawing abilities, was encouraged by Moretto engage directly with the abstract language of painting. Theresults are works that demonstrate a palpable tension betweenrepresentational compositions and the dissolution of figurationinto the marks and colors and shapes of complete abstraction. He bridges the distance between these positions by the elaboration of intimate, even erotic, personal vocabulary that affirms above allvisual pleasure.

JAIME RUIZ OTIS
When he was a child, Jaime Ruiz Otis never imagined that he would be making art. Heenjoyed observing the passing of time; whatwas left. This is something that he nowreflects upon and finds within his creative processes. Ruiz Otis’ discovery of art wasmere coincidence; or perhaps art found himin 1993. He was 15 years old and to this datehe has not stopped from making art or artfrom making him. In 1999, he started work ata

in hazardous waste. At lunchtime, he would search for waste materials intrash containers. He did it as the primitiveman searched for survival resources. He soonfound a wealth of interesting and plasticallyrich materials: different kinds of toners, rolls of industrial foils in metallic colors, rolls of stickers, paper, etc. with which hestarted creating a piece called

,transforming, integrating and transferringthese materials using techniques that, over time, he discovered or developed.
