Parents and children share picture books.
Parents follow their children\u2019s lead in play.
Staff mingles with parents asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s new?\u201d
GATHERING AND SETTLING
Parents and staff sing song while helping children to clean up.
All greet one another by shaking hands and singing the\u201cHello\u201d song.
CLEAN-UP
Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere.
Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.

WELCOME SONGS
Parents and staff sing each child\u2019s name during the song.

Parents face children toward them and hug and kiss while singing.

PREVIEW AND CIRCLE TIME
Staff uses props and pictures to prepare children and parents for the playgroup activities.
ANIMALS IN THE ZOO
Tune: The Wheels On The Bus

ANIMAL CHANT
Rhythmic Chant

ELEPHANT WALK
Group Movement Activity

Move around the room walking like elephants. Children carry plastic elephants. Beat large drum in center of room fast, slow, stop and go.

Pass out zoo animals to children. Add verses for
monkeys and bears.
Beat individual drums to chant. Hide animals under
boxes. Animals come out when the drum beat stops
Play safari background music.

CREATIVE PLAY STATIONS
Free play with theme puzzles, playdoh, duplo animal blocks and bubbles
Staff briefly describes the play stations that are set up throughout the room. Parents follow their children\u2019s lead as they explore the play stations.
AQUATIC CENTER
Messy Play

Children and parents play together at a sensory table filled with aquatic animals. Use plastic turtles, alligators, and hippos. Put floating and stationary islands in the water.

Add spray bottles to mist the
animals.
ANIMAL PRINTS
Creative Play

Children use zoo animal shaped sponges to print on white paper \u201ccages\u201d with black stripes. Label with child\u2019s name and send home.

FEED THE ANIMALS
Language/Pretend Play

Feed zoo animals puppets shredded paper \u201chay\u201d from galvanized buckets. Ask the animals if they are hungry and use the words \u201cyes\u201d and \u201cno.\u201d

ANIMAL FAMILIES
Problem Solving Play

Put animals in laundry basket cages by families. Use a variety of sizes and types of animals.

SNACK TIME
Children, parents, and staff wash hands. Serve snacks individually as the children are seated at the table.
