Builder scribbled: Brian, what you have seen on TV and movies and read in books is science fiction, intended to frighten for the purpose of selling something. For an alien civilization to travel a great distance to destroy is preposterous and quite contrary to all evidence we have seen when humans explored the planet for the first few times. A species smart enough to do that kind of travel is more interested in learning and trading than in destroying. To conquer and destroy alien civilizations may be the American way, but it's neither practical nor common to other cultures.

Brian W Porter: OK, Unless they're locusts, as in the YASF I've written. By the way, The theory of warping space has a formula. We just don't have a source of energy strong enough. Do others? Who knows? Has someone already come? Again, that's unproven, therefore unknown. What would they do if they came? Again, it's unknown. All options are open, to quote an ex-president. about 1 hour ago

Builder scribbled: seaview, there is a great deal of literature about animals communicating with each other, even communicating between species to a limited extent (mostly body gestures). When I speculate or hypothecize, I state it as such. When I quote something as if it is fact, I have sources that are verifiable, but I don't use them in my articles because most readers don't want them and they don't want articles cluttered up with university paper style quotes. If I state something as fact, I have the evidence. My purpose is never to convince anyone to any way of thinking, but to get readers thinking about the subject. References are not material to that process. You can believe the facts or disbelieve them, but so long as you think about them my objectives has been accomplished.

Builder scribbled: David, intelligence develops most often in a "social" setting as well, such as in a school classroom, a meeting room, or even by being among a group watching the evening news on television. Input is always individual, though the setting is usually with more than one person. The problem is that we do not actively teach social skills and emotional skills the way we do intellectual skills and physical skills. Children not exposed to social and emotional learning opportunities do not learn, even in social settings, because the focus is on other things. Carol, I recommend that you commit your thoughts to writing before they get lost. You never know where the written word may go.

Builder scribbled: Thanks Kenosis. Relationships are about what goes out from us, not about what comes in. Those who focus on what they get from the other tend to find themselves alone eventually. As a friend of mine says, "To get a friend you must first be a friend." He claims that's a quote from the Bible. True or not, the words are valuable.

Builder scribbled: 42, I would note two things. First is (as the article suggests) that highly intelligent people are often socially underdeveloped, thus making friends who are like them is more difficult than for the average person ("The Big Bang" TV show is not typical). Second would be if the highly intelligent person thinks more about themselves than about the other, then a friendship would fall apart as any friendship would. The "throw-away" society does not teach relationship skills and it doesn't value them highly. Great analysis, by the way. Thanks.
