About me: I am a retired Stuctural Engineer living in India. Writing used to be a hobby; now it is a passion. I do not write for gain or fame, but because it makes me complete. People fascinate me and I have friends - offline and online - all over the world. I try to be tolerant, but I have a high IQ and I do not suffer fools gladly. The first thing I look for in a new friend is a sense of humor : next comes honesty and respect for other points of view. My other loves are romantic movies, easy listening music, reading - and my wife of 32 years.

If you are one of those who has had it up to here with the current price of gas and rising grocery bills – and are concerned about global warming - blame it on the fat people – or the obese, if you want to be politically correct.

The reaction of India’s security agencies in the aftermath of a terrorist incident has become so predictable, that it is almost text book. It is a classic example of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

In these recession-hit times, an increasing number of folks are falling into the debt trap. Many more are also falling into the text trap. I am referring to those ubiquitous text messages that anyone with a cell phone sends out by the hundreds with reckless abandon.

It took a prescient and wise gentleman named Bal Thackeray to realize that Bombay was not realizing its full potential; and that it was its colonial name that was holding the city back.

But how much is a stay at home mom really worth? People have tried to put a financial value on this for years. The latest attempt comes from Salary.com, an American company that studies workmen's compensation.

Simply put, hypermiling has the potential to increase gas mileage, even in gas-guzzling SUVs. And it does not involve high technology; simply the application of simple laws of physics that have been around since the beginning of time.

As if I did not have enough to worry about with global warming and skyrocketing fuel prices, I now find myself in a further quandary. It appears that I am to blame for the increasing cost of groceries at Wal-Mart.

Burt Gummer...if you are a typical example of the ignorant bigots that populate America, I am indeed thankful to be living in India.

Atul...I might "accept" it, if you learned how to spell.

You may think he's a genius, but that sure does not apply to you jerks.

I think it's spelt Al-hambra, but that is just a matter of semantics. I was fortunate enough to visit there; and it is truly awe-inspiring.

Magic Man...your scorn for "intellectuals" says it all. Any further response would be superfluous.

Extremely well put, hkadman, and I couldn't agree with you more...a poet, moreover, whose luminosity radiates through the page.
What the hell have nude photos to do with this very serious article? You guys are perverts. Maybe we should send you to Afghanistan. The taliban would love to meet you.

There are few things more tragic than having a promising young life truncated prematurely due to drugs. What often starts out as an 'experiment' - or something that needs to be done to blend with the 'in' crowd - turns into an uncontrollable obsession. And dying of drug overdose is one of the most degrading ends one can imagine. There is certainly nothing glamorous about it.

Anonymous...whatever yr opinion or unwarranted grouse against Candida, I will just say this. At least she has the courage and integrity to put her name and her reputation behind her words. She does not hide beyond some cowardly pseudonym. If you want to get up on yr soap box, don't cower behind a mask...let the people know who you are. Since you keep insisting on an intelligent rebuttal; your argument seems to be that if the government is snooping into the private lives of citizens anyway, what's wrong with Google does it ?(that's real "intelligent"). In other words, two wrongs make a right. You ignore a few trickles seeping through the dam; and pretty soon, you have a flood you can't control.

I have long felt that technology is getting out of control. People are testing its limits, not out of any inclination towards the public good, but merely because they can. In a few years, 60 year old women will routinely have babies, using their long frozen eggs. With greater bandwidth and increasingly sophisticated software, the internet has become open season for stalkers, perverts and pedophiles. The Google Street View is solely about profit: all the rest are platitudes. If we invent everything in this lifetime, what will be left for future generations?
