About copyright. I don't own the stuff I'm posting here, and none of it is out of copyright. . . . In the original copyright law of 1709 in Great Britain, works remained protected for a maximum of 28 years. I think this struck a good balance between the rights of creators to enjoy the fruits of their endeavours, and the benefits to society of allowing people to use information freely. In the Twentieth Century, the duration of copyright was continually extended. It now stands at the life of the author, plus 70 years. I see no sense in this at all. If the author is dead, he or she cannot benefit from copyright protection. Of course, the reason for this long period of copyright is that wealthy corporations that own a lot of intellectual property have been able to bribe politicians to pass laws favouring them. . . . I do not believe it is immoral to post other people's work here on Scribd, as long is it was created sufficiently long ago. 28 years seems like a good figure. In the case of the documents I am posting, the original authors can no longer profit from the sale of their work, and I believe the harm done to the corporations that do own the rights is outweighed by the benefits to the public at large.
