Thar Desert – The NextGen Powerhouse of India
Posted on December 6, 2007 |
A back-of-the-envelope calculation: As written in the article, the solar intensity is 6kwh/sq m/day or 250w/sq m. Considering the cheapest and most inefficient method of linear fresnel lens having efficiency of 15%, the power produced would be 37.5w/sq m. i.e. 37.5MW/sq KM or around 1GW/25 Sq KM. ...and Thar desert area is 2.34 Lac sq KM (0.234 Million sq KM)! so now you can imagine the potential!!!

Thanks Mr. R Rajagopal for pointing out the mistake - it should be read as 0.234 million sq km or 2.34 lac sq km. Also, India's area is around 33 lac sq km.

Thank you "M" for your precise comment! That's the one-line outcome I expect. I would keep on posting docs on similar subject. The very fact that the docs posted on Scribd are viewed worldover makes me excited and gives me the strength to write more such stuff! Great site indeed!
