Cultural Creatives!
Shaping Globalization:
Civil Society, Cultural
Power and Threefolding
(2000)
Nicanor Perlas
Cultural Creatives are behind such recent visible and leading edge
phenomena as the USD $1 trillion sustainable development investments,
environmentally sound technologies (EST), sustainable consumerism, ecotourism, and the call for a more socially and ecologically responsible global
economy. They have encouraged an increasing number of businesses to
reinvent themselves, serving the "greening" edge of their consumer markets,
instead of the wasteful materialistic trends of the past.
Cultural Creatives also impact other large-scale social processes. While their
lifestyles have radically altered the content of media advertising, Cultural
Creatives are also active in the various social movements seeking a
more equitable global economy. They advocate for leaner and more activist
States. They spread democratic values, including direct
democracy, which is now the dominant value in the world of polity.
They are the human beings behind the emergence of civil society, the
potent new global force that is starting to shape the behavior of both
transnational corporations and governments. They are behind the birth
of the new whole field of study in mainstream sociology concerned with
understanding the "new social movements.
-- Nicanor Perlas. 2000. Shaping Globalization: Civil Society, Cultural
Power and Threefolding
I found that values are terrific predictors. What was new, what
nobody expected, was that this values group belonged to
subcultures, a way of valuing things, seeing life and talking about
the world. We knew about the Traditionals, who were social
conservatives and religious conservatives, and the Moderns, who
were very materialistic and live by getting and spending.
And then there was this third group that, when we got started
represented about twenty percent of the population and was clearly
slowly growing and clearly had not been there in the few value
surveys that had been tried years earlier. As near anyone could tell,
they had not been there before the 1960s. After a while, I started to
say, Well, they are more creative about new ways of life. They are
more creative about the products they want. And there are cultural
differences. So they must be Cultural Creatives.
