Introduction
Congratulations on taking this first step to becoming a non-smoker! Althoughnicotine addiction and the habits surrounding it are hard to break, it can be done – permanently. Imagine a life where you don’t have to stand outside your officebuilding in the rain or cold just to light up. Think of all the money you’ll save – not just in the cost of cigarettes, but in future health care expenses. Envision theyears you’ll add to your life and how much more time you’ll have with the peopleyou love.If someone gave you this ebook as a gift, I hope it will inspire you to take thosefirst steps to make a decision to quit. For those of you who chose this bookbecause you’ve had it with holes burned in your clothes, bronchitis andcomplaints from your family, understand that maintaining your motivation is thekey to making this plan be a success for you.I know, because I used to be a smoker. Actually, I was more like a chimney withlegs! I was the dreaded chain-smoker. Every event in my day was an excuse tosmoke. If I wanted to start anything, I needed to have a cigarette first. When Icompleted a task, I needed to have a cigarette. I needed to smoke when therewas a crisis going on. A cigarette was necessary to relax. There weren’t manytimes that
weren’t
a time to smoke, unless it wasn’t allowed by others around me.I smoked three packs a day, and some days I would start the fourth pack beforegoing to bed. If I hadn’t quit 15 years ago, I would probably be dead by now or, atleast, in very poor health. My life definitely would have been cut short by myhabit.I first realized I had to quit when I started getting shortness of breath while tryingto do simple exercise, walking up stairs and other activities that a young, healthyperson should be able to do without much thought. I should have known betterthan to ever start smoking. Having worked in nursing homes and seeing peopledie of emphysema alone should have discouraged me. But it didn’t. I wasdifferent from all those other people. I could handle my smokingThe last straw for me happened during practice for a community track team. Ihad just joined the team to compete in local track meets for fun. Just 10 yearsbefore in high school I had been a track star, throwing discus and javelin. I hadalways warmed up by running a couple of laps around the track before throwing. This time, I couldn’t make it around the track. I couldn’t believe how hard it was – something that once had been so easy for me. I realized smoking really was

affecting my health, even though I was only in my late 20s. I finally was scaredenough to do something about it.I had to take back the control I had given cigarettes in my life. I wanted my lifeback. I wanted to live.It took awhile to find what worked for me. I tried stopping cold turkey, and thatnever worked. I tried playing the counting game – limiting the number ofcigarettes per day in increments. Although nicotine pills and patches weren’taround when I was trying to quit, many of the other ex-smokers I have talked withsay that these medications really were just a substitute for the cigarettes, andthat they really didn’t offer permanent relief. The only sure-fire way of stoppingfor them, and for me, was to change our habits. I had to change my behavior
before
I threw the cigarettes away.I want to help you to throw away
your
cigarettes forever! You must take back thecontrol that you have given to smoking. Yes, smoking is an addiction, but it isalso a habit. I call it an addictive habit. The smoker is just like the recoveringalcoholic who must stop drinking for the rest of their life. You must stop smoking, not just “cut back.” I had to remove smoking from my life and replace the hours Ispent with a cigarette in my hand with more healthy activities. I can teach youhow to do that, too.I was inspired to write this book after years of having conversations with smokerswho were trying to quit. Their failed attempts at quitting were the same ones Itried before the plan. They always wanted to know how I quit and found mymethod very interesting. I figured if the plan worked for me, it would work forothers. The plan is really very simple. Every week you will have an assignment to do toprepare you to stop smoking. Each weekly assignment will include some guidesand suggestions to help you complete your weekly task. Because motivation isimportant, there will be some educational and inspiration information toencourage you to stay the course. It’s easy to fall back on those negativemessages we think when we smoke, and half the struggle is maintaining yourpositive attitude throughout this time while you are preparing to quit.I’m excited for you! There will be times this plan won’t be easy. The journey weare about to go on will have its ups and downs, but by the time we get to the endof the plan, you will be ready to quit. In fact, the last night of the plan I had to
force
myself to finish that last cigarette. I was ready. I want you to get to thatplace so that you, too, can live a better, healthier life. You can do it. I’ll be therefor you.
