affecting my health, even though I was only in my late 20s. I finally was scaredenough to do something about it.I had to take back the control I had given cigarettes in my life. I wanted my lifeback. I wanted to live.It took awhile to find what worked for me. I tried stopping cold turkey, and thatnever worked. I tried playing the counting game – limiting the number ofcigarettes per day in increments. Although nicotine pills and patches weren’taround when I was trying to quit, many of the other ex-smokers I have talked withsay that these medications really were just a substitute for the cigarettes, andthat they really didn’t offer permanent relief. The only sure-fire way of stoppingfor them, and for me, was to change our habits. I had to change my behavior
before
I threw the cigarettes away.I want to help you to throw away
your
cigarettes forever! You must take back thecontrol that you have given to smoking. Yes, smoking is an addiction, but it isalso a habit. I call it an addictive habit. The smoker is just like the recoveringalcoholic who must stop drinking for the rest of their life. You must stop smoking, not just “cut back.” I had to remove smoking from my life and replace the hours Ispent with a cigarette in my hand with more healthy activities. I can teach youhow to do that, too.I was inspired to write this book after years of having conversations with smokerswho were trying to quit. Their failed attempts at quitting were the same ones Itried before the plan. They always wanted to know how I quit and found mymethod very interesting. I figured if the plan worked for me, it would work forothers. The plan is really very simple. Every week you will have an assignment to do toprepare you to stop smoking. Each weekly assignment will include some guidesand suggestions to help you complete your weekly task. Because motivation isimportant, there will be some educational and inspiration information toencourage you to stay the course. It’s easy to fall back on those negativemessages we think when we smoke, and half the struggle is maintaining yourpositive attitude throughout this time while you are preparing to quit.I’m excited for you! There will be times this plan won’t be easy. The journey weare about to go on will have its ups and downs, but by the time we get to the endof the plan, you will be ready to quit. In fact, the last night of the plan I had to
force
myself to finish that last cigarette. I was ready. I want you to get to thatplace so that you, too, can live a better, healthier life. You can do it. I’ll be therefor you.
