A Message from the Director
Today’s law graduates are more likely than ever to be involvedwith legal issues and clients rom East Asia. At the same time, legal problems in the region, rom human rights, to thedevelopment o new jury systems and systems o legal educa-
tion, to economic reorm, are invaluable sources o comparative
insight. The Clarke Program takes on these challenges andopportunities by promoting serious and sustained conversation
among scholars and practitioners in dierent parts o the world. The Clarke
Program’s mission is to oster collaboration—across disciplines, across cultures, andbetween established scholars and innovative young researchers—that brings to lightnew questions, and new answers on subjects o pressing contemporary concern. The year 2007-08 was an exciting and productive one or the Clarke Program inEast Asian Law and Culture. This report will provide an overview o the work o thescholars and experts representing many felds who participated in lectures, collo-quia, conerences, and workshops this year. You will read about recent ellowships,
collaborative research projects, short and long-term scholarly exchanges, and
student exchanges that occurred in academic calendar years 2007-08 and 2008-09,in addition to announcing a ew o the upcoming events or 2009-10.
