Ancient Olympics

According to legend, the ancient OlympicGames were founded by Heracles( the Roman Hercules) , a son of Zeus.
In Ancient Greece, at a place calledOlympia, the first Olympic Games wereheld at 776 BC .
The Ancient Olympic Games were heldevery four years, for nearly thousandyears. The Games, like all Greek Games,were an intrinsic part of a religiousfestival held in honor of Zeus.
In 393 CE, the Roman emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished theGames because of their pagan influences.
The very first modern Olympic Gamesopened in the first week of April 1896.
