This week in Hedon for residents:Wed 15th April: You cangive bloodat the Co-Op, it is the deadline for submission of material to Issue 9 of theHedon Newsletter;Thurs 16th April:Consultation session on Waste Incinerator, and theHedon Vehicle Crime Project. The entrance toHull’s Streetlife Museumsis a TARDIS - honestly! Notonly does it convey you to historical artefacts of times gone by - butit really makes the museums look smaller on the outside than theyare on the inside!Entrance through a small shop front brings you into the massiveStreetlife site and a journey through Hull and the East Ridings’histories. One of the first sights greeting you is a woolly mammoth (there is a full-sizereplica) and the journey takes you from ‘fossilised’ eons, right through to Hull’s‘modern’ (now decimated) fishing industry. However, it is the Transport Museum next door which really over-awed me! I remembervisiting Hull’s original museum as a kid, but the new one built in 1987 contains so muchmore and is presented in a much more accessible manner. The main walkway is made up of a street containing an old tram, single decker bus, fireengine, old shop fronts, level crossing and signal box (re-located from Cottingham Northwhere my Grandad worked in it for a while!). Everything is ‘friendly’ i.e. it caters for thosewho want to touch, feel, climb onto, push, pull and explore! The history of transport is charted with an impressive collection of stage coaches (withrealistic horse smells?!), ‘horseless carriages’, bikes and motor bikes. The Arctic Corsair -a Hull Trawler - can be viewed on the river outside and tours aboard can be arranged. The Duff’s went with friends and five (normally bored!) youngsters from ages 4 - 10 all of whom seemed to have thouroughly enjoyed themselves! One of the advantages of living in Hedon is the fairly easy access to Hull and its attractions. So if you haven’t been to Hull Museums Quarter for a while - then make the trip; you willnot be dissappointed! The Spurn Ranger is operated by EYMS (East Yorkshire Motor ServiceNo 73) and runs every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday

Itoperates between Withernsea and Spurn Point andconnects at Patrington to provide a direct connection fromHedon (Services 75/76/77 - see Bus Services to Hull inpublic information on the right-hand sidebar).Of course, holders of Local Authority Elderly/Disabled BusPasses can use the service for free! For details of the service or for further information, pleasesee thetimetableon the EYMS Website or contact Buscallon 01482 22 22 22. The Spurn Ranger is funded by EastRiding of Yorkshire Council and project managed byHumber & Wolds Rural Community Council.“Spurn is a special place. Picturesque landscapes, romantic settings steeped in history with unrivalled views of the Humberestuary. It’s home to the only full time lifeboat crew in England, who all live atthe Point. Spurn defended England from 1588 (the Spanish Armada) right upto World War II. If you look closely you can see many old military structures. The area is managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve so is likea natural theme park right on your doorstep! By leaving your car behind andusing the bus you are helping to protect the area’s precious wildlife as well asreducing your carbon footprint by choosing a sustainable form of transport.Using the bus also reduces congestion on narrow country roads and causesless disturbance to local residents.” EYMS News ReleaseSource: EYMS News ReleaseFurther Information:BBC - Seven Wonders - Spurn Head EYMS Spurn RangerWordPress.com, which powers The Hedon Blog, is a powerfulpublishing tool that allows several people to write and edit Blogarticles at the same time. The Hedon Blog aims to be a GROUP BLOG with local Hedonpeople and others posting articles and comments about thethings that interest them about the town. Advice will be available about keepingvehicles safe during an event to be held inHedon on Thursday, April 16, between10.30am - 1:00pm.
A vehicle crime project or ‘morning of action’ is taking place inHedon and villages including Aldbrough, Burstwick, New Ellerby,Paull, Skirlaugh and Sproatley.A community support bus will be in Hedon town centre giving out advice and information.Meanwhile certain streets in other villages will have special packs of information deliveredon deterring car crime. An interesting twist to the day will be the use of “vehicle crime indicator cards” which willbe issued to cars to remind drivers to put away any items on display in their vehicles. If valuables can be seen through a car window, then the risk of it being broken into areincreased. The East Riding Council issue the following advice on vehicle crime for car owners:
l
Lock the doors and close the windows when you leave the car - for any length of time.
l
Don’t leave anything on display - even a jacket can seem like an appealing target fora thief.
l
Remove the stereo if you can. Also, tuck in wing mirrors and put the aerial down todiscourage vandals.
l
Never store your car’s documents in the car.
l
Use an approved immobiliser or sterring lock to help secure older vehicles.
l
Think about having components and windows etched with the car’s vehicleregistration number (VRN) and make a note of its chassis number.
l
Keep your car keys in a safe place, even in your house, so that someone breaking incannot steal your car too.Source: ERYC Website -Vehicle Safety in Holderness.Hoppy Easter to all readers/visitors to the Hedon Blog!In true Hedon Blog style we have a seasonal JigZone puzzle for you: Click to play this puzzle (requires Java to be enabled).Image:Easter on the Net
