Hedon throwing the pennies away – literally!
Posted byrayduff on May 22, 2009Apparently there are over 6.5 billion pennies unaccounted for throughoutthe UK – that’s £65 million pounds worth. 40% of these are presumed tobe lost on the street. However, you can guarantee that Hedon’s mainstreet is clear of lost pennies due to the efforts of local children pickingthem up during the town’straditional penny throwing!Pictured is town Mayor Ann Suggit and other dignitaries who share the civic traditionalduty to throw the pennies and 2ps to local children. And they really do throw them – I’llhave to video this extraordinary ceremony next year!

Community Speed Watch may come to Holderness
Posted byrayduff on May 21, 2009A Police Forum has revealed suggestions for
 possibly
piloting a newCommunity Speedwatch scheme in the Mid and South West HoldernessWard area.If the idea is successful in gaining the necessary support fromfundholders and police bosses, then a Community Speed Watch wouldaim to help people reduce speeding traffic though their communities. The scheme would support trained volunteers to work within theircommunities to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and tohelp control the problem locally.Community Speed Watch incorporates poster and sign campaigns linked to direct actionusing speed guns. The use of the devices will lead to speeding drivers being sent warningletters from the police. The Police Forum meeting held in Hedon Town Hall last night was attended by localcommunity policemen Sergeant Tony Towse and PC Bob Pyle and chaired by Victoria Wisefrom Humberside Police Authority.Residents interested in the Community Speed Watch and other local neighbourhoodpolicing issues were advised to keep an eye on the Humberside Police South West

Enterprising Seaside Resort Regeneration
Posted byrayduff on May 17, 2009The issue of seaside resort regeneration featured in the media a few times last week.Firstly BBC’s The Apprentice featured a light-hearted approach to the very real problem of Margate’s degeneration as reported by theTelegraph. ThenVisitBlackpoollaunched its J’aime la Tour video which aimed at encouraging French tourists to visit the town. I thinkthis will become a modern advertising classic! But perhaps the best news during the week was Scarborough winning the award as themost enterprising place in Europe! The Hedon Blog would be keen to hear what is happening in our local seaside resorts topromote their regeneration.I’ve chosen the Blackpool video to feature today because I love it! Anyone for ‘Otpot’ –Oui!
