Wheelie bin fires on Drapers Lane!
Posted byrayduff on June 12, 2009A wheelie bin fire on Draper’s Lane tackled by the Fire Brigade atabout 2:45am this morning seems to have been the work of arsonists and could have had tragic consequences for the twoflats and families concerned (each flat had small childrensleeping).Fortunately nobody got hurt but the results could have beendifferent had neighbours not spotted and alerted the fire brigade. The design of the two storey flats in Draper’s Lane greatlyincreases the risk of families being trapped in upstairs flatsduring fires. The stairways are the only means of quick escape.

Another flat a few doors away had its wheelie bin set alightabout 5-6 months ago. This morning’s fire therefore raises fearsabout a local arsonist possibly being active. This will raise the question of whether aNeighbourhood Watch scheme or something similar would be beneficial for the area?Local families would certainly benefit from reviewing their ‘fireescape plans‘.Posted inHedon| Tagged:fire,Fire Safety,Neighbourhood Watch, wheelie bins|No Comments »

Report the Smellies! Eradicate Bad Smells from Waste WaterTreatment Works at Saltend!
Posted byrayduff on June 11, 2009Unpleasant smells can be a re-ocurring problem of living in Hedon due to the fact that we live close to amassive industrial complex at Saltend. However, recentimprovement works to the Yorkshire Water’s WasteWater Treatment facility should result in a reduction inbad pongs from that establishment. But residents helpis requested in reporting any continuing problem. The East Riding Council is carrying out a 3-weekintensive “odour monitoring exercise” into smellscoming from the Waste Water facility at Saltend. If residents detect an odour then they should note theirlocation and the date and exact time. They should thenreport this at their earliest convenience.Odours from the site should be reported to theEnvironmental Control teamon telephonenumber 01482 396301. Smells that are detected out of normal office hours (between5:30pm and 8am) can be reported by message on voicemail using telephone number01482 396176.Visits to the area in which an odour is reported may also be made and the council havepledged to carry out additional spot check assessments. The exercise is due to run until the end of Sunday 28th June 2009.Posted inHedon| Tagged:East Riding Council,Environmental Control Team, pollution, Saltend,Smells,Waste Water Treatment Works,Yorkshire Water|No Comments »

Rambling Walks around the East Riding
Posted byrayduff on June 9, 2009
Walking the Riding
TheEast Riding News(now conveniently availableonline) always contains useful information from ourlocal council. The current issue comments on therevamp of the council’s website for walkers – Walkingthe Riding. The redesigned website atwww.walkingtheriding.co.uk contains over 250 walks that can be completed on footas well as identifying routes for bikes and horses. The database of walks can be searched for walks inparticular areas. A search on “Hedon” brought up fourwalks in the Southern Holderness Area that passthrough the town, including a 3.5mile “short stroll”from Patrington to a cracking 12 mile hike from Hull toWinestead. Each walk contains information about accessibility – sopeople in motorised scooters, with prams, etc can planroutes that are suitable for them.Another potentially essential feature of the website isa walkers’ forum that if utilised (you have to register)will allow people to leave useful comments about the walks and pass on usefulinformation - an essential service that might also help contribute towards themaintenance of particular routes by bringing issues to the attention of those responsible. The website contains additional guides on walking and on the East Riding; a FrequentlyAsked Questions section will undoubtedly be improved as the website gets more users andfeedback. In short – a very useful website! Congratulations to the East Riding Council and all thoseinvolved in publishing it.

European Election Results 2009: Yorkshire and the Humber
Posted byrayduff on June 8, 2009
The European Elections 2009 took place under the shadowof the WestminsterMPs’ Expensesscandal. The Yorkshire and the Humber Region saw the election of the first member of the BNP (British National Party) to theEuropean Parliament. This unfortunate – even scary! –development serves to remind us that the traditionalparties are failing to inspire and motivate people toparticipate in the political process.
The full results of the regional poll is as follows:
