Posted byrayduff on July 18, 2009TheHull Daily Mail has reportedthat Orchard Park in Hull will benefit from £156million to re-develop the area. As somebody who originally hails from the estatethen this is interesting news – albeit with concern that decent properties will beculled and existing communities face uncertainty and upheaval. The redevelopment will include the demolition of 1,040 existing properties and thebuilding of 1,700 new homes. This development takes place in the context of other projects happening in thearea including a new £14m health care centre opening later this year, andproposed new £38m Academy school on Queen Elizabeth Park to replace theexisting Sir Henry Cooper secondary school. It is also hoped that anyredevelopment will lead to a revamp of the estate’s shopping centre which hasbeen a long-standing need in the area. The Orchard Park Estate was originally planned in the late 1930’s. The Hull DailyMail commented at the time that living on Orchard Park would be like living in anew sort of world with its own parks, cinema and bomb-proof shelters! The Estate actually got constructed in the early 1960’s and may not have includedthe hoped for cinema and shelters, but
was
built with the most modern televisioncable system available at that time already installed into its infrastructure.Rediffusionwas a Hull based firm that pioneered the concept of cable television. Each new home built on Orchard Park had television cables already pre-installed.The local school Sir Leo Schultz High was wired up and even had its own TV studio. In light of this historical link that Orchard Park shares with new technology, thenthere is, once again, a marvellous opportunity to build the new estate with regardto, and to cater for, the most modern systems currently available?Fibrestreamhave announced exciting opportunities to bring super-fast broadbandto the city and, in my humble opinion, perhaps needs to be a partner in thisventure. There is something extremely satisfying and equally justifiable in bringingmodern digital inclusion technology to an area of the city that has for so long beenassociated with social exclusion!?Items of interest:Remembering Rediffusion Posted inHistory,Hull,ICT| Tagged:Digital Inclusion,Fibrestream,Hull,Hull Daily Mail,OPE,Orchard Park Estate,Rediffusion,Sir Leo Schultz High School,Super fast broadband|1 Comment »

A report of the Police Forum meeting held on the 20th May at Hedon Town Hall (seeBlog post) completes the news coverage in the publication. The ‘minutes’ of Hedon Town CouncilPlanning and Property Committees for June2009 fill three pages in the newsletter. This certainly enables a far widercirculation of these important documents, but I wonder if the space might havebeen put to better and more newsworthy use?Once again congratulations and thanks to the Editors of the Hedon Newsletter forkeeping this local publication going.Posted inHedon| Tagged:Dog and Duck Public House,Hedon,Hedon Museum, Hedon Newsletter,Hedon Town Council,HOTI|Leave a Comment »
Swine Flu new name and new treatment strategy
Posted byrayduff on July 13, 2009Apparantly the World Health Organisationis now referring to Swine Flu virus as thePANDEMIC (H1N1) 2009 Influenza. This isto distinguish it from seasonal H1N1influenza virus and to avoid the stigma of associating the name with swine (takenfrom theNational Travel Health Networkand CentreWebsite). With the new name also came a newstrategy to deal with the outbreak in theUK. With the virus spreading and thenumber of new cases beginning to doubleevery seven days, then the healthauthorities have moved away from tryingto contain the virus to actively treat thoseinfected. In practical terms, this will mean GPs willbe able to diagnose Swine Flu and treatpeople on the basis of symptoms rather than waiting for laboratory testing. Effortsto trace and treat people who
may
have had contact with the virus will cease.Anyone who has contracted Swine Flu will be offered antivirals. Local primary caretrusts will also begin to establish designated antiviral collection points in theirlocal communities. These may be at a pharmacy or a community centre, dependingon local need.David Nicholson the Chief Executive of the NHS in England in his recentletter to allNHS staff has confirmed that a vaccine will soon be available:“As you may be aware, the Department of Health has signed contracts topurchase sufficient vaccine to vaccinate the entire population with the firstdeliveries arriving in August, and at least 60 million doses are expected bythe end of the year. Decisions are yet to be made about who will beprioritised to receive the first doses of the vaccine, but I anticipate thatfrontline staff will be considered alongside other high priority groups inorder to protect them, their families and their patients.”A plethora of documents detailing the above “Treatment Phase” is available fromtheDepartment of HealthWebsite. However, what seems more difficult to find isLOCAL information about Hull and East Riding infection rates or levels.Posted inEast Yorkshire UK,Hedon,Hull,UK/International| Tagged:David Nicholson CBE,Department of Health,PANDEMIC (H1N1) 2009 Influenza, swine flu| 3 Comments »
