New centre provides facilities for businesses to access
E
ast Riding of YorkshireCouncil recentlycelebrated the officialopening of Brough BusinessCentre – with the officesalready 75 per cent let.
The council has now developedeight such centres, withsplit funding from YorkshireForward, the European RegionalDevelopment Fund and thecouncil’s capital programme.Councillor Stephen ParnabyOBE, leader of the council, said:“The centres provide valued andwell used facilities for businessesto access advice, support, trainingand networking opportunities.“The work that has goneinto developing and improvingthe business centres is a vitalinvestment in the East Riding’sfuture and the current economicdownturn makes it all the moreimportant that we maintain ourwork to support businesses.”The Brough Business Centrehas been created through therenovation and remodelling ofthe ‘old flying club’ on the BAESystems Ltd site on Skillings Lane.The project has been designed toassist in the creation and survivalof business start-ups and also todevelop a unique partnership withBAE Systems by accommodatingtheir existing supply chain onsite with priority for office space being given to companies inthe advanced engineering andmanufacturing sectors.Tony Arksey, site director of BAESystems, Brough, said: “Everyoneinvolved in this project hasdone a fantastic job in providingeconomically priced, modern andvibrant offices to enable young businesses to prosper in the localregion.“I have every confidence thatBrough Business Centre will be anamazing success and I wish the businesses inhabiting the facilityevery success for the future.” Jon Fell, a director of videoproduction company JayJay Mediawhich is based in the businesscentre, was equally impressed:“The offices are modern, spaciousand fitted out to a very highspecification.“We often invite clients to ouroffices for meetings and they lovecoming here. Everyone wants tohave a look around and manyhave asked about availability. Thecouncil has done a great job inrefurbishing an old building to 21stcentury standards”Amanda Hoggart, the businesscentre manager for East Ridingof Yorkshire Council, said: “Weopened in July 2008 and to date 26 businesses have moved into the business centre to take advantageof its excellent facilities. The business centre has also helpedto accommodate 27 new jobs as aresult of the companies housed.”Brough is the newest businesscentre with established sitesalready located in Bridlington,Driffield, Market Weighton,Beverley and Goole . YORKSHIRE WATER MAINS REPLACEMENT WORKS KELDGATE, BEVERLEY - ROAD CLOSURE
Yorkshire Water will be carrying out essential work to replace underground water mains at the junction ofKeldgate and Lairgate in Beverley; this work will begin on Monday 3 August and is programmed for completion onFriday 21 August.Due to the position of the underground pipes and to ensure the work is undertaken safely theroad will have to be closed for the 3 week period,a signed diversion route through the town will be in place.
It is anticipated that this work will cause serious congestion and delays during peak traf
c periods.
During this period the Council Highway Department will take advantage of the road closure to carry out essentialmaintenance works.

Giving young peoplea taste of government 
T
he hard workundertaken by theEast Riding YouthAssembly (ERYA) hasn’tgone unnoticed andrecently they were filmedfor BBC2’s Democracy InAction programme.
Assembly member SamStainforth said: “We work hardall year on different campaigns.Our current one is about gettinga transport discount card foryoung people. It was great thatthe BBC came along and filmedwhat we are up to.”The transport discount cardis aimed at 13-21 year olds.The ERYA sent a questionnaireout to young people and the800 replies showed a definitedemand for free transport. It’shoped that a pilot scheme onfour bus routes will take placesoon.The Youth Assembly is alsoinvolved with the CouncillorShadowing Programme.Councillors Jump andAbrahams have allowed Mollieand Laura, two Youth Assemblymembers, to shadow them aspart of a national initiative toencourage young people to getinvolved in local democracyand experience leadershipwithin their local communities.ERYA was set up in October2003 and is made up of around40 young people aged 11 to19 who aim to improve the lotof other young people in theEast Riding as well as having agood time with lots of fun andopportunities for themselves.Richard Moulson, senioryouth worker, said: “TheYouth Assembly is all aboutimproving the lives of youngpeople. More than 300 peoplehave helped us do just thatsince we formed. Any youngperson can join so why not giveit a go?
