New ‘destination’ playpark one of best in East Riding

new playpark hasrecently opened atHaltemprice LeisureCentre in Springfield Way,Anlaby.
Fiona Thompson, Pathfindermanager, said: “This exciting new‘destination’ playpark is one of the best facilities in the East Ridingand gives children and youngpeople the opportunity to climb,clamber, swing, balance, dig and burn off lots of energy, making useof innovative equipment togetherwith some old favourites like thesandpit and swings.”Local children and adultshave helped design the playarea, which adds to the rangeof activities available at theHaltemprice Leisure Centre site.The new park has been funded by £200,000 from the Departmentfor Children, Schools and Familiesas part of the East Riding’s PlayPathfinder project, which aimsto encourage more children toplay out, have adventures, makefriends and get fit.Big Lottery funding is alsoproviding natural play featuresat the park, through the work ofYorkshire Wildlife Trust.Councillor Jane Evison,portfolio holder for culturalservices, housing and publicprotection, said: “The newplaypark is a state-of-the-artfacility and part of a networkof quality play spaces that thecouncil is developing with the aidof grant funding under the PlayPathfinder programme.“As well as providing themwith lots of fun, playing outdoorsin well equipped parks like theone at Haltemprice Leisure Centrehelps children develop socialskills and encourages them to leadhealthy and active lives.”

EY Events celebraterecord breaking year

Y Events is celebratingholding a record numberof events in 2009 despitethe economic downturn.
Estimated figures show that sinceMarch more than £4.5 million has been generated as a direct result ofthe events that have taken place.This amount is a conservativefigure based on average nationaldaily visitor expenditure.These events have attractedvisitors to the East Riding, creatingover 40,000 bed nights andgenerating income and investmentfor local businesses.Councillor Andy Burton,portfolio holder for communityengagement and local economicdevelopment, said: “East YorkshireEvents has managed to attract animpressive number of prestigiousevents to the East Riding, whichhave had a direct benefit to the area by raising the profile of the EastRiding and attracting visitors. This brings a much needed boost to thelocal economy.”Included in this record yearhave been a number of highprofile specialist events suchas the European Open BeachChampionships, World andMasters Blackball Championships,WINMAU World Masters Dartsand the National Men’s Elite CycleCircuit Championships.Paul Roggeman, conference andevents manager, said: “This yearhas been extremely challengingfor us but by streamlining andmodernising our operationswe have gone from strength tostrength.“We have focused on providinga first class service for ourconferences and events and believethat by delivering such a variedrange of national and internationalevents we have firmly placed theEast Riding on the map.”The final event of the year willsee hundreds of pigeon fanaticsflocking to The Spa Bridlingtonon 7 and 8 November for the EastCoast National Pigeon Show.The event, now in its secondyear, hopes to eventually emulatethe show held in Blackpool, whichattracts 20,000 people.For more information, visitwww.eyevents.co.uk

THE medieval market town of Beverley hasbeen chosen by British Cycling to host theblue riband event of UK town centre racing in 2010.The town will make cycling history by hosting the National Elite Circuit RaceChampionships for the third consecutive year.The championship will see 70 top racerstackle a town centre circuit on the evening of Friday, 16 July, and is the highlight of athree-day free cycling spectacular.On Saturday, 17 July, up to 500 hundredcyclists will be able to take part in sportiverides of 60,100 or 160 km as part of The Big G (Grimpeurs Des Wolds) Cyclo-Sportive.The weekend will reach its finale onSunday, 18 July, when the 140 best racersin the UK will take part in the 98 mile East Yorkshire Classic event around the Yorkshire Wolds, as part of the British Cycling premiercalendar national race series.Paul Roggeman, conference andevents manager for EY Events, said: “It isremarkable to win the chance to host theChampionships for a third consecutive year. Credit must be given to the working partnership between Hull Thursday RoadClub and East Riding of Yorkshire Council who have greatly impressed BritishCycling.”Race media chief Michael Boyle said:“To win the right to hold this event againstfierce competition from across the UK is aremarkable achievement.
