Capacity increase attracts bigger stars

The Spa can now hold 3,800,an increase of 300 since its £20mrefurbishment last summer. Themove makes the venue a moreattractive tour location.Councillor Jane Evison,portfolio holder for culturalservices, housing and publicprotection at East Riding ofYorkshire Council, said: “We areconstantly working on bringinggood quality live entertainmentto Bridlington and the regionand we feel that we are now ina different and much improvedleague.“We hope that residents andvisitors alike will continue tosupport the venue and we lookforward to welcoming friends oldand new. We would like to takethis opportunity to thank them allfor their continued support.”Officers from Humberside Fireand Rescue inspected The Spaduring the sold-out Oasis concertin August before approving thechange last month.Since refurbishment TheSpa has hosted acts includingThe Kooks, Scouting for Girls, Jools Holland, Jane McDonald,Kasabian, Lee Evans and JimmyCarr.It has also hosted eventsincluding the YorkshireInternational Business WeekDinner, the World and MastersBlackball Pool Championships,the BDO British Open men’sdarts singles, the Winmau WorldMasters and the Legends of Darts,BBC One’s Antiques Roadshowand the McCain Foods nationalconference.Andrew Aldis, general managerof the Spa, said: “The demand has been such for the recent concertsthat we felt it was a necessityto move towards an increasedcapacity.“We have been working hardalongside fire safety and licensingdepartments to ensure that the building is ready to make thatfurther step.”

er for the Elvis WorldCup during a three day ElvisWeekender from 19-21 February.The winner of the event at TheSpa Bridlington will representEngland at The World Cup Finalin Cardiff on 4 July, 2010.Andrew Aldis, general managerof The Spa said: We are veryexcited to have been chosen forthis fantastic event.The whole weekend soundslike it is going to be fun frombeginning to end.“We hope that Bridlingtonand the region will embrace thisfestival.”
Elvis comesto town
 WORK is underway on the new park and ride facility for Bridlington, which forms a key part of the town’sintegrated transport plan to improvetraffic flow and road safety in thetown.
The council has secured £5.7million from the Government toimplement the plan.The park and ride is beingconstructed on the existing SouthCliff car park and will providesecure parking for up to 1,000vehicles with a dedicated bus orland train connection into the towncentre along a sea-front route.Access will be via a new roadrunning along the existing accessroad and through the South ShoreCaravan Park.Other highway improvementsare also currently being undertakenoutside the main holiday seasonto minimise disruption and arescheduled for completion inMarch 2010. These include newroundabouts and the removal ofan existing small roundabout onBessingby Road/Hilderthorpe Road,which will be replaced by trafficsignals and road widening.A new electronic car parkingmonitoring and signage system isto be introduced, which will directmotorists to the nearest convenientcar park with available spaces. Someroad reclassification and new signingto direct and control traffic aroundand in the town are also planned.Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE,leader of the council, said: “TheBridlington Integrated TransportPlan has been several years in theplanning and design stage, so it isgood news that the main work isnow in progress.“The changes, which will provide better access to the town andhelp resolve some long-standingtraffic congestion problems, are animportant part of the regenerationprogramme to revitalise Bridlingtonand bring greater opportunity andprosperity to the town.”Meanwhile, the council is lookingat a range of potential measureswhich would benefit access tovarious education sites, includingthe recently redeveloped East RidingCollege, and also improve roadsafety.These improvements would formpart of the Local Transport Plan.Design work is in progress. If asuitable scheme and funding can be secured, local residents will beasked for their views at a publicconsultation.

n impressive twoand a half metre-high metal hide– the latest sculpture tobe installed as part ofBeverley’s Town Trail – hasbeen installed in the towncentre.
The cut-out of a carcassfrom 30mm-thick plate steelis impossible to miss and is astriking start to the trail.Councillor Jane Evison,portfolio holder for culturalservices, housing and publicprotection, said: “I’m delightedto have seen this piece beinginstalled. Beverley has a wealthof history and the trail willinspire people to discover this.Visitors and residents alike will be able to learn something fromthe valuable work that has beencarried out to create this trail.”The hide is part of the secondwave of installations whichillustrate the historic guilds ofBeverley. Other artworks thathave been installed as part ofthe second wave include:• A snake wrapped around alamppost depicting Barber-Surgeons at Toll Gavel• A beaten-copperrepresentation of thetraditional clothing item, a jerkin, suspended overhead atBeaver PassageLine drawings of healingplants that have beentransformed into pavementplaques to represent theapothecary trade at LandressLane• Two stone-carved pavementplaques representingwallpaper on Highgate;Beverley was the first town inthe country to manufacturewallpaper.With the hide installed, half ofthe pieces that make up the trailwill have been fitted and thetrail is expected to be completednext year.
