IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE, winter begins on the “shortest day” of the year December 21, and lasts until March 20 which is the beginning of spring, marked bythe vernal equinox, when day and night are equal in length. So yes! Winter is officially here in Hedon, East Yorkshire, UK!

Funding available for activities for 13 – 19 year olds

TWO FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE in the East Riding tosupport activities and projects for young people.Andunlike lots of other funding programmes, these twofunding schemes are directly influenced by youngpeople. The Youth Opportunity Fundputs money into thehands of young people to help them decide aboutwhat activities they want to do. Young peoplemanage the fund. The YOF could be used for employing coaches, booking transport, payingentrance fees, booking halls for activities, etc. The Youth Capital Fundwill be used to improve and develop facilities for youngpeople, with young people steering the use of resources. PARLIAMENT(UKYP)is currentlyrecruiting newcandidates tobecome Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) for the East Riding. The UKYP aims to give the young people of the UK a voice, which will be heard andlistened to by local and national government, providers of services for youngpeople and other agencies that have an interest in the views and needs of youngpeople. Members of the youth parliament are aged between11-18. Members meet aroundsix times a year. Once elected MYPs organise events and projects, run campaignsand influence decision makers on the issues which matter most to young people.All MYPs meet once a year at the UK Youth Parliament Annual Sitting.  Young people who wish to stand for the UKYP need to submit their name by 31January 2010. Read more »

Alison Hall Hedon to open as a restaurant

FOR THOSE OF YOUthat haven’t noticed, then large posters have appeared onAlison Hall announcing its opening as a restaurant and bar in March 2010. Alison Hall was opened on 10th December 1931 and was named in honour of MrsAlison Todd the then President of the local WI (Women’s Institute). The historicAlison Hall grille bearing the WI motto now hangs outsideHedon Museum. Anyone got any further information on the new development?
