This magazine has been put together to showcase theMicrosot Sotware + Services (S+S) strategy roman architectural perspective and will help explain theundamental architectural considerations and impactthat sotware plus services will have.Microsot’s investments in S+S are ramed bythree core principles. Firstly, experiences shouldspan beyond a single device. In our world o ever-increasing devices, choice in the right computingpower in the right place at the right time isparamount. User experience environments that spanseamlessly rom the browser, to the PC, to the mobileand the console need to be brought together toprovide lexible yet uniied experiences.Secondly, inrastructure and solutions should extendrom the server to the cloud. Cloud services developedhand-in-hand with on-premise server counterparts willdeliver much needed choice to enterprise customers— enabling exibility in developing, scaling, operatingand migrating systems that are distributed between thecloud and the enterprise datacentre. And lastly, tightly coupled systems should give way toederations o cooperating systems and loosely coupledcompositions. With the right transparency, standards,identity and interoperability, these small pieces o codeloosely joined help developers build new applicationsand services out o base components – enabling agileand cost-eective development.Sotware + Serivces also recognizes that or mostcompanies the ideal way to build IT inrastructure is tofnd the right balance o applications that are run andmanaged within the organisation, and applications thatare run and managed in the cloud.Traditional approaches to building technologyinrastructure and delivering computing capabilitiesmake it difcult and expensive to adjust to these newrealities. Microsot’s progressive shit toward S+Sis reshaping and transorming our existing oerings— and inorming our roadmap or the uture.Take a look ahead at what a uture o connectedsotware and services could bring. Applications andservices that once stood apart become ar more valuablewhen taken together. Business moves aster, ideas owmore reely and people grow more deeply connected.In Issue Two o The Arc, we aim to show you theimplications or S+S and the eects it has around security,interoperability and services by talking to key fgures andgaining an insight o how things might play out. s we glance back in time it ispossible to see a number o keytrends, or ages, in computing- rom the mainrame that gave way to thePC that once networked provided modelsto share inormation and data, to the emer-gence o the internet itsel and the ability toshare inormation between organisations.But what is the next wave?Today, we are witnessing a great transi-tion in computing, driven through the broadavailability o the internet, the increasedbandwidth to share data, and the proliera-tion o cheaper connected devices rom thedesktop to the mobile phone.Indeed, it is easy to get lost in this newwave given the deaening buzz that is outthere. However, several concepts are start-ing to emerge rom the rest: sotware as aservice and service delivery; Web 2.0 anduser experience; service orientated archi-tecture and service composition; as well asthe cloud and service platorms.Once we combine these concepts wecan start to paint a picture o what’s hap-pening: the era o the connected device ando sotware plus services (S+S).S+S draws together these conceptsand in so doing provides a defnition orMicrosot’s technical strategy or this newdawn.To understand S+S it is best to look at an example. As we know Exchange isavailable as an installed server applicationwithin the enterprise, but it is also avail-able as a hosted platorm either througha hosting partner or direct rom Microsotdatacentres as part o the its online suiteo services. This is what we describe as a‘fnished’ service.The second characteristic o S+S isthe client or user experience tier. In thiscase Outlook provides the classic desktopapplication or interacting with Exchange,oering a rich user experience with keyeatures such as local storage and oinecapabilities. When a user is away romtheir machine, Outlook WA oers a thinclient browser based experience allowingaccess rom any machine connected tothe Net. Then there is mobile, provid-ing capability to access rom a mobiledevice once more utilising its resourcesin supporting local storage and oinesupport. Finally or Exchange there is voiceto access your inbox and when used inconjunction with unifed communications,you can access your voice data too. Thisdescribes the multi-headed eature oS+S and its key eature o synchronisationacross all heads. A third S+S characteristic is that oattached services which can be viewedas extensions to the core fnished service.These would not make sense existing inisolation, but are discrete in that they canbe located independently o the fnishedservice itsel. For exchange this compriseshosted Exchange services such as fltering,archive, continuity & encryption.When you pull all this together, it goessome way to describing the new worldo S+S.The frst tier is our experience tier, thePC on your desk or the phone in yourpocket. Sotware here shows a richness ointerace, local storage, oine support andsynchronicity – all to varying degrees inrelation to their context.This frst tier, o course, is our experi-ence tier and it’s all about you. The secondis the enterprise tier, the back-end sys-tems hosting our business inrastructureand our business solutions. The scale othis is roughly the size o the enterpriseand serving this is really the designcentre o today’s server architectures andsystems management architectures, ando most major enterprise datacentres.The third is the Web tier - externallyacing systems serving your customers,your prospects and potentially people theworld over. Scale here is the size o the Weband this tier requires computation, storage,networking, and a broad set o high-levelservices designed explicitly to scale inf-nitely, on-demand and on a global scale.High-scale internet services inra-structure orm the new tier in computingarchitecture. In a S+S world, fnished andattached services sit across these tiers,providing instances that are deployableas traditional on-premise sotware orconsumable as remotely hosted internetbased services that are managed indepen-dently or by Microsot itsel.The fnal element o S+S yet to bediscussed is that o platorm or ‘buildingblock’ services. These share a similar traitto that o ‘fnished’ and ‘attached’ in thatthese two can exist both on premise (UX& Ent tier) or o-premise. Perhaps thebest example here in the enterprise tieris that o the .NET ramework itsel whichorms the undamental building blockso sotware. In the web tier the reacho .NET is extended through Windows Azure, Microsot’s own ‘cloud’ computingplatorm.
