My Personal Online Teachingool Kit
Tina L. Brewer Teaching OnlineCoursesSummer 2009
Project #5 - PersonalOnline TeachingToolkit

I. Orientation/Introduction PolicyWelcome and thank you for signing up for this online course. For manyof you, this may be your first online (via the Internet) course, so we'lluse the entire class today to discuss the course, get acquainted with afew simple computer operations, and poke around a little to see howthings will work. If you are not a computer wiz, don't worry -- you won'tneed to be. From a computer standpoint, absolutely everything issimple. By the time you leave class, you'll know almost everythingneeded to navigate this course on the Internet.
Why the Online Format You Ask?
If you might be wondering why the course is presented online in thefirst place, please continue reading…One advantage of the online format is the ability to include a variety of dimensions – graphics, video, audio, podcast, webquest and the listcan go on and on. I am hoping that by using a variety of technologiesthey will make the subject more engaging and the material easier tounderstand. You won’t have to pass any of the materials needed for the class to theperson sitting next to you or strain your eyes to see a screen at thefront of the room – they will be right in front of you! So that you canspend countless hours studying them, keep them or whatever you maychoose to do with them is entirely up to you. I expect you to gainunderstanding and knowledge from them.During the course I hope that you will appreciate the time and effortthat was put into creating an engaging learning environment for you. The course has been created in a way that allows for 24/7 access, plenty of room for insightful discussion, regular online office hours withthe instructor and much more.
A Note about You and This Course
Every student learns in their own way. One of the advantages of theonline format of this course is that it allows students to approach thecourse in a way that is suitable to their personal styles and

preferences. In classrooms, instructors are inclined to teach either asthey themselves were taught, or as they think "the average student"prefers. Online, all of the instructor-presented class material is laid outat once and students can do with it whatever they prefer in order tolearn in as personal and unique a fashion as possible. To understand how
 you
might learn best and how you might approachthe course, I would suggest that you complete a
use the information given to figure and interpret yourscore, and plan your learning strategy accordingly. After completing theinventory please view this
website. Also if you have the time there is a short
where Richard Felderdoes an excellent job of introducing learning styles, how studentslearn, how teachers teach and what goes wrong within the process. This course by design accommodates different learning styles byinvolving a variety of components, including text, graphics, video/audioclips, quizzes, reference lists, online discussion and a problem basedlearning project. Since you are probably used to learning in anarranged or required format presented by a classroom teacher and arenot used to designing your own learning strategy, it might take a littletime to do that and to settle into a comfortable routine. I think you'llfind that as you figure out on your own (and with the help of the onlinequestionnaires mentioned above) how to learn the material, everythingwill fall into place. You will find that online learning is quite different than traditional face-to-face classroom learning. It requires different attitudes, responsibilities, and communication skills. To help you prepare for thisdifferent learning environment (for most students), you might want totake a
(a short online course abouttaking online courses -- sounds a little strange?).
