New Skills include:Language Arts and Theme:
We are continuing to learn all about different kinds ofbears. The students are particular fond of the Polarbear and the Panda Bear in this class. We will bediscussing another strategy for reading: Visualization-good readers make visual images in their mind when theyare reading about the book!This week we will continue to discuss the Holiday wecelebrate on Monday “Martin Luther King Jr. Day.” Thestudents have been learning important facts about MLKthis past week. We will continue to do some activitiesfollowing the day off on Tuesday when we return.I am hoping to place some of the students MLK projectson our BBboard outside our room. Be sure to stop by onJan. 22

during the International Festival in the eveningto see the MLK work displayed down by our class.We have also started to count sounds in words which isone of the Kindergarten standards for the state as wellas a skill on your child’s report card for the 3

9 weeks.The DIBELS screening gave me an overall baseline to seeif children were able to say each sound in a word inisolation. We will do work in class this week withcounting sounds in words.

Writer’s Workshop:
We are assessing so much that our writing hastaken a little bit of a back seat. We are hopingto get into our Writing for Reader’s theme soon.
Math-
continued work with the ten framethis week. Numbers greater than 10 up to 20.Students should begin focusing on recognition ofNumbers 11-20. Some students have master thisand are working on other activities as well. We allneed a better grasp on what the ten frame means.Ex: 10 + 1 = 11 10+ 3= 13 etc..

Assessments:-- DIBELS mid yearassessments are going on – we made itthrough the first 4 assessments for phonemicawareness and we are beginning our readinglevel assessments this week.
