About Shakespeare:
WilliamShakespeare(baptised26April1564died23April1616)wasanEnglishpoetandplaywright,widelyregardedasthegreatestwriterintheEnglishlanguageandtheworld'spre-eminentdramatist.Heisof-tencalledEngland'snationalpoetandthe"BardofAvon"(orsimply"TheBard").Hissurvivingworksconsistof38plays,154sonnets,twolongnarrativepoems,andseveralotherpoems.Hisplayshavebeentranslatedintoeverymajorlivinglanguage,andareperformedmoreof-ten than those of any other playwright.ShakespearewasbornandraisedinStratford-upon-Avon.Attheageof18hemarriedAnneHathaway,whoborehimthreechildren:Susanna,andtwinsHamnetandJudith.Between1585and1592hebeganasuc-cessfulcareerinLondonasanactor,writer,andpartowneroftheplay-ingcompanytheLordChamberlain'sMen,laterknownastheKing'sMen.HeappearstohaveretiredtoStratfordaround1613,wherehediedthreeyearslater.FewrecordsofShakespeare'sprivatelifesurvive,andtherehasbeenconsiderablespeculationaboutsuchmattersashissexual-ity,religiousbeliefs,andwhethertheworksattributedtohimwerewrit-ten by others.Shakespeareproducedmostofhisknownworkbetween1590and1613.Hisearlyplaysweremainlycomediesandhistories,genresheraisedtothepeakofsophisticationandartistrybytheendofthesix-teenthcentury.Nexthewrotemainlytragediesuntilabout1608,includ-ingHamlet,KingLear,andMacbeth,consideredsomeofthefinestex-amplesintheEnglishlanguage.Inhislastphase,hewrotetragicomed-ies,alsoknownasromances,andcollaboratedwithotherplaywrights.Manyofhisplayswerepublishedineditionsofvaryingqualityandac-curacyduringhislifetime,andin1623twoofhisformertheatricalcol-leaguespublishedtheFirstFolio,acollectededitionofhisdramaticworksthatincludedallbuttwooftheplaysnowrecognisedasShakespeare's.Shakespearewasarespectedpoetandplaywrightinhisownday,buthisreputationdidnotrisetoitspresentheightsuntilthenineteenthcen-tury.TheRomantics,inparticular,acclaimedShakespeare'sgenius,andtheVictorianshero-worshippedShakespearewithareverencethatGe-orgeBernardShawcalled"bardolatry".Inthetwentiethcentury,hisworkwasrepeatedlyadoptedandrediscoveredbynewmovementsinscholarshipandperformance.Hisplaysremainhighlypopulartoday
