In the darkness of Onett, a man hears a knock at his door.

He doesnt get up to
open it, of course opening the door at the state things are in now would be suicide. He
simply sits, cautiously, awaiting whatever voice may accompany the knock. He knows
there will be a voice; there always is. After the voices come the scrams, and he winces
at that point, but still, he thinks, better him than me.
The voice, as expected, comes. Its a childish one, but it bears a sense of world-
weariness. H-hey, mister, are you there? I know youre in there. Cmon, answer me.
The man remains silent. Theres no danger. All the monsters have moved up to the hill
now. I dont even want to come in, I just have something for you. The man heard
something being taken out of a sort of bundle. You know what time of year it is now,
right?
The man stood up, intrigued. Still not answering? In case you havent been paying
attention, its Christmas. You do still remember what that is, right? Christmas, you
know? Its a time for happiness, a time to do good for others. You still remember that,
right?
The man walked up to the door. You might not remember me, but I remember you.
You threw my ball back when it landed in your yard, remember? It was only once, but it
was still better than anyone else has been to me in this town. Im still new here, you see,
so people havent quite taken a liking to me yet. You know how it is here. Im sure you
do.
He did. He can remember when he frst came to Onett. Nobody had so much as
given him the time of day on the frst few days, and even after hed gotten all his
fnancial troubles settled, he was still ignored by the general populace for years
afterward. He can only imagine what that must feel like for a child. He cant bear it any
longer. He reaches out and grabs the doorknob.
I can hear you there now. Have you changed your mind? Its really not that hard.
Just grab the knob and turn it. Ill step back if youd like. The man heard footsteps. I
really do think youll like your present. It took me months to get ahold of, and I made
sure to ask everyone around town what they thought youd like. Most of them told me to
shove of, but a couple of people gave me some advice. I hope you like it.
The man feels a smile coming to his face, even in these dark times. He grips the
knob fully and turns. The lock clicks open, and he feels the doors resistance fading. He
pulls the door open fully, and sees a bright fash of light. He continues to see the fash
for several seconds, by which time he is already fully immobile. Where the man once
stood there is now only a large gemstone. Were the man able to see it, he would most
likely remark that its the best job hes ever seen, and that it looks just like him.
The monsters standing at his door laugh. Thats the third one today! You know, I
didnt think this would work, but humans really are stupid creatures! They all fall for the
same stuf. You just have to know how to bring out the right emotions. They laughed
again. Come on, lets do the next house!
