1.SCOPE
1.1This specification lays down the requirements and tests for battery chargersfor use in Railway S&T installations.1.2The battery chargers covered in this specification are self-regulating typeand are suitable for charging of lead acid stationary secondary batteries. Inauto mode of working the charger will automatically change over from autofloat to auto boost mode of working if the batteries are discharged and willswitch back to auto float mode after the batteries get charged. A provisionis also made to switch over to manual mode in case failure of auto mode. However, chargers with manual mode alone are not covered by thisspecification.1.3The battery charger covered under this specification shall work satisfactorilymeeting all the prescribed parameters as long as the AC input voltage iswithin 160V-270V range. In case the AC input voltage goes below ‘160V’ or goes above ‘270V’ use of a separate AC voltage stabilizer in conjunctionwith the charger is recommended.1.4The nominal output voltage and the rated output current of the charger arerequired to be specified by the purchaser.

Note 1) : The nominal voltage of a lead acid secondary cell will be taken as 2.0 volts andnominal output voltage of the charger will be calculated accordingly. Theoutput current rating of the battery charger may be calculated by adding thetotal equipment load to be supplied by the charger and one tenth of the AHcapacity of the batteries which are to be kept on float charge by the batterycharger.Recommended capacity of chargers for some of the standard capacity secondarycells in use on Railways are given below:
S.NoCell Cap(Amps. Hrs)C/10 RateRecommendedcurrent ratingcharger (Amps)Max. permissibleload (Amps).
1.4041062.80820123.1201230184.200205030Note –2: The current ratings of 5,10,15,20,30,50,75,100 and nominal voltage ratings of 12, 24,36,48,60,110 & 120 volts are recommended for adoption by Railways. This will help in standardising the equipment and ultimately in testing &maintenance.Note – 3: In case, the charger is required for input voltages other than standard 230V AC,the same shall be specified by the purchaser. Special requirements, if any, shall be specified by the purchaser.1.5The charger of 12, 24, 60 & 110 volts output shall have a provision for chargingnumber of cells as mentioned below:
OutputVoltageProvision for charging No. of cells
126,7,82412,13,146030,31,3211055, 56, 57LED Indication shall be provided for indication of number of cell selected.1.6One set of spare control card shall be supplied along with each battery charger and shall be kept inside the charger at conspicuous position to avoid any kind of damage.
2.TERMINOLOGY
For the purpose of this specification, the terminology given in IRS:S 23 shall apply.
3.CONSTRUCTION
3.1The chargers shall conform to drawings, dimensions and layout, if any, specifiedby the purchaser.3.1.2All cable entry holes should be provided with rubber grommets.
