THE ECLIPSE
The
major event for July is the eclipse of thesun which takes place in the morning of
July22nd
. It has been thecause of much debatein Yakushima abouthow to balance thedelicacy of naturewith the expectednumbers of eclipsewatchers. In the end alottery system wascreated so that 4,500special ticket holderscould see the eclipsein Yakushima. Anymore and the island'sinfrastructure would be unable to hold upunder the strain. As a result of this from July 19th to July 25thaccess by ferry and jet foil is controlled by thetown hall. If you do not have permission, youmay be denied boarding during these dates.Flights do not have the same restrictionsalthough they sold out long ago.As can be seen from the illustration above thetrajectory of the eclipse runs over Yakushimaand many of the smaller islands of the Ryukyuisland chain. The best place to see the eclipse onYakushima is in Onoaida where it will last 4min 6 seconds. Next best is at Kamiyamaschool in Hara which is eclipsed at almostexactly 10.56 for 3 min 51 secs.Watch out for the Yakushima eclipsesouvenirs. There are special edition bottles of Shochu which are presented in their very own eclipse boxes. There are alsolimited editioneclipse stamps tocollect.
