AUGUST
2009
THE SUMMER SEASON
August brings the height of the summer seasonand the first wave of this year's
typhoons
toYakushima. Keep an eye out for typhoonssouth of Yakushima, even from a longdistance away they can affect transportationlinks due to high waves. A good weather siteis listed on yakumonkey website under thevideo of a typhoon. Check it before you go.Also remember that this is a very busy time onthe island and if you wish to avoid the crowds(and damaging the forest) avoid the temptationto hike to Jomon sugi. It is admittedly the treeon everyone's lips when you mentionYakushima but the trip can be a let down inAugust. If you have the guide book, try outsome of the less trekked routes and experiencethe forest as it should be experienced.July saw the much anticipated
eclipse
darkenthe skies above Yakushima to strangely quietviewing areas and through low cloud. It wouldappear that the island survived the onslaughtof tourists and to most people there was verylittle difference from a normal week insummer.
The deer 'problem'
There are somewhere around 7,000
Yakushika deer
on Yakushima island and thenumber isincreasing everyyear. While thisappears a goodthing on the surfaceand allows many aphoto opportunityfor tourists, itcomes however at aprice.Undergrowth inmany key parts ofthe island hasdecreased

dramatically due tothe voracious appetiteof the roaming deer. Many of these includesaplings of the verytrees which makeYakushima famousand without these nextgeneration trees theforest is in danger. The numbers of deerincreased dramaticallyafter a decline inhunting and steadilyless harsh winters andperiodicquestionnaires comeround from the townhall as it decides whatto do with them.Farmers have beenholding a private waragainst the deer forsome time now. Thefollowing is by nomeans an isolatedexample: A neighbouronce came by with thecutest little bambi-likecreature with bigglistening eyes and asoft whimper. It wastied to the back of hissmall pick-up andcovered with a blueplastic sheet for theshort journey from hisplot of land to myworkshop. He hadcaught it in a trap thenight before. If suchthings were possible Iwould have instantlyadopted it and broughtit home as the newestmember of family, given it a cute nameand taken it for dailywalks in the longgrass. But alas, it wastaken down the hill tothe river, swiftlydecapitated (with thehead floatingdownstream), skinned, and sliced intocookable pieces forthe night's dinner.Whatever the finaldecision may be overthe fate of the Yakushika, like it or not, Ithink it is likely thatyou will see morevenison on the menusof Yakushima'srestaurants as timegoes on.
