The summer of 2009—with his splashy This Is It concert series already selling out—was supposed to be Michael Jackson’s big comeback. Years of bizarre behavior, plastic surgeries and pedophilia accusations (despite a not-guilty verdict in his 2005 child-molestation trial) had drowned out the music and left the ’80s pop phenom a fallen star, but he still had high hopes. “He was one of the greatest entertainers of all time,” says Matt Richards, coauthor, with Mark Langthorne, of the new book 83 Minutes, excerpted below. Yet Jackson “was in no state to perform the This Is It tour,” Richards says. “The entourage of ‘yes’ people created an arena of unreality [around him].” Chief among them—providing the drugs the star’s addictions demanded—was Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray, who was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s June 25, 2009, death.
