DONALD J. TRUMP Victory Against the Odds

IN AN UPSET FOR THE AGES, THE FORMER REALITY TV STAR GALVANIZES HIS SUPPORTERS—AND DEFIES THE PUNDITS—TO BECOME THE 45TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
“This was tough,” Trump told the crowd celebrating his win at the New York Hilton. “This political stuff is nasty and it’s tough.”

The evening had started off subdued: a cash bar, an anxious crowd, hundreds of eyeballs fixed on the monitors in a ballroom at the New York Hilton in Manhattan. A few blocks away at the Trump Tower, Donald Trump, his running mate, Gov. Mike Pence, and their families appeared “tense,” a family source told People. Then the polling results started pouring in—and so did the wins. By midnight supporters at the Hilton were chanting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” and “Build the wall! Build the wall!” And another chorus, aimed at Trump’s defeated rival, Hillary Clinton: “Lock her up! Lock her up!” But in his victory speech, delivered at nearly 3 a.m. with his family by his side, Trump struck a far more positive note: “Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division,” he said. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all America, and this is so important to me.”

“You’ve all given me such incredible support,” Trump told his staff (with him and his family in Trump Tower watching election results on Nov. 8).
