It’s lunchtime at Nicole Curtis’s home near Detroit, and the single mom is busy feeding her 2½-year-old son Harper a bowl of pasta when the toddler pushes the dish aside and frantically reaches for her breast to nurse. “I keep saying it’s not like he’s 7 or 8—he’s still a baby,” she says, protectively stroking his hair as the toddler latches on to her chest. “Every single day I have to weather criticism about how my child is too old to breastfeed. But when he weans, it’s going to be his decision. I truly believe it’s the child’s choice.”

And it’s one that Curtis, 41, the star of the long-running DIY Network series Rehab Addict, is happy to defend, even as her choice to continue nursing her 30-month-old has emerged as a point of contention in a vicious two-year custody battle with her ex Shane Maguire, 54. “I
