John Mahoney

On Feb. 4, the actor best known for playing the lovably cantankerous Martin Crane for 11 seasons on Frasier passed away from throat cancer at age 77. Here, the show’s longtime executive producer Christopher Lloyd remembers Mahoney.

IT WAS HARD TO FIND someone who could stand up to Kelsey Grammer. The show was largely about Frasier and his dad Martin butting heads, and Kelsey would have outdone just about anyone. John was Kelsey’s equal. I did not create the role of Frasier.
