The actress opens up about becoming America’s favorite TV mom—and what she’ll do next

After nearly two decades spent starring as a quintessentially middle-income, middle-American mom on television—first on Everybody Loves Raymond, then on The Middle—Patricia Heaton has every reason to want to kick back and enjoy some downtime. But the actress, who turned 60 on March 4 and is about to say farewell to The Middle, doesn’t quite feel ready to settle down. “My youngest son is out of the house, my show is ending, there’s a lot of things to contend with,” she says. “But I feel like at this age, there’s more opportunities for me than ever. I am so aware of how blessed I am, but there are more challenges ahead.”
