In the last minutes before Hurricane Irma roared across the Virgin Islands last September, Kenny Chesney got a text from the local friends he’d invited to take shelter in his St. John home. “They sent me a video saying thank you and we love you and just all that kind of stuff,” Chesney recalls. “And that’s the last I heard from anyone.”

For the next six days the country superstar stayed glued to the television in his Nashville home, watching the devastation unfold as the category 5 storm ripped across the Caribbean. “Everybody was scared,” says Chesney. “There was no Internet, no cell towers, no power.
