John Krasinski confronts new dangers that are present but not all that clear

DRAMA Fictional CIA hero Jack Ryan was introduced in The Hunt for Red October, a game-changing bestseller, in 1984. It was very much a Reagan-era book—the President himself called it “my kind of yarn” (and even recommended it to Margaret Thatcher). The movie adaptations of this and other Jack Ryan tales starred Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and Chris Pine, actors who project a virility (as did Reagan) that is both American and Hollywood.
