By 1795, the vast Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had been partitioned by their dominant neighbours Russia, Prussia and the Habsburg Empire. Poland effectively disappeared as a sovereign state for 123 years until it was restored at the end of the First World War. During its time under foreign control, there were a number of insurrections by Poles seeking the restoration of Polish autonomy.
