As the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP-Nazi Party) began its long climb to the top of the political ladder in post-WW1 Germany, the group’s undisputed leader, Adolf Hitler, felt it necessary to have a body guard unit established to defend himself and other high-ranking Nazis from attacks by the Communists and political adversaries. In 1923, eight men were chosen for this initial task. By 1925, the Party had assembled a new group that would grow into the hundreds of thousands — the feared Schutzstaffel (Protection Squad – SS).
