About this audiobook

Tevye the Milkman, a uniquely charming Jewish novel from Tsarist rural Russia, provided the principal character for Fiddler on the Roof. Here we have the full story, with all its Jewish humour, wisdom and despair. The central character, Tevye the Milkman, goes around the community in the Russian countryside delivering milk and cheese, but also dispensing wisdom from the Talmud laced with his commonsense view of life. Funny, enriching but also moving, this remarkable little Jewish classic will charm all who hear it, especially in the reading by veteran audiobook performer Neville Jason.

Sholem Aleichem

Sholem Aleichem, pseudonym of Solomon Rabinovitsh (1859–1916), was one of the preeminent classical writers of modern Yiddish literature. His literary pseudonym was derived from the Hebrew expression “shalom aleichem,” meaning “peace be with you.” He arrived in New York in 1906 (after barely escaping a pogrom the previous year) as the world’s most famous Yiddish writer. Attesting to his popularity in the New World, Aleichem’s funeral was among the largest New York had ever seen.

This is the second time I've read this classic. I loved the writing of Tevye, but found Railroad Stories repetitive, and not too interesting. I was less than thrilled with many of the portrayals.

amazing story I'm now going to watch the play fiddler on the roof, (which is based on this book). I'm not Jewish, and this is a tale of a Jewish man, steeply based in religion. But it doesn't matter, all can benefit from this story. I pray that all have the strength and courage of Tevye no matter what they are facing

“Tevye the Milkman” is a multifaceted gem, filled with wisdom, charm, lush descriptions and family relationships. Sholom Aleichem’s beautiful writing preserves the experiences and situations that confronted our grandparents. But it goes beyond the Jewish experience. Its themes are universal and often not so harmonious.
