Editor's Note

An entertaining epic…

An imaginative reinvention of a classic epic, this entertaining foray into Ancient Greece will satisfy lovers of literature and poetry alike.

Description

The legend begins...

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. "The best of all the Greeks"-strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess-Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine-much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

What an exciting adventure! Beautifully done! I loved the narrator!

This book surprised me. Its a love story between Patroclus and Achilles leading up to and during the Trojan war. The story is told from Patroclus' point-of-view and shows how much these two love each other and really balance each other out. Although I feel that this book is very well written, I did find a couple things that I, personally, did not like. For instance, I felt the ending was a bit rushed. It was this whole emotional build-up and then "there was light", the end. This is just my personal opinion and is in no way meant to degrade the author's writing style. Overall, I liked the book and would recommend it to others.

I cannot stop crying. It was so beautiful. <3 I will never forget this book.

It was so beautiful and tragic. If love exists, it is Patroclus, who follows Achilles to his death. I will never recover from it and I don't want to. I will definitely come back to witness it again.

Well written book that encompasses a lot of Greek mythology. Developed romantic plot. I wasn’t riveted, hanging on every word, and I wouldn’t read it again but it was good.

Madeline Miller has a way of words that I have never seen anywhere else. The romance that exists between these two characters is powerfully deep and Miller’s writing threads each word and sentiment to convey the intricate, complex, and satisfying love that empowers these two individuals. It is beautiful and I appreciate wholeheartedly the love between these two men.
