About this audiobook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Jude Deveraux, the bestselling author of unforgettable romance, returns with a breathtaking first book in a fantastic new series-the Nantucket Brides trilogy. Set on the magical Massachusetts island, True Love introduces characters from a new generation of Montgomery-Taggerts, the beloved family from Deveraux's classic novels.

Just as Alix Madsen is finishing up architectural school, Adelaide Kingsley dies and wills her, for one year, the use of a charming nineteenth-century Nantucket house. The elderly woman's relationship to the Madsen family is a mystery to the spirited Alix-fresh from a romantic breakup-but for reasons of her own Alix accepts the quirky bequest, in part because it gives her time to plan her best friend's storybook wedding.

But unseen forces move behind the scenes, creaking Kingsley House's ancient floorboards. It seems that Adelaide Kingsley had a rather specific task for Alix: to solve the strange disappearance of one of the Kingsley women, Valentina, more than two hundred years ago. If that wasn't troubling enough, Alix must deal with the arrogant (and extremely good-looking) architect Jared Montgomery, who is living in the property's guesthouse.

Unbeknown to Alix, Jared has been charged with looking after her while she lives on the island-an easy task for him, considering the undeniable chemistry between the two. But Jared harbors secrets of his own, which, if revealed, may drive a wedge between the pair.

With a glorious Nantucket wedding on the horizon, sparks fly, and the ghosts of the past begin to reveal themselves-some of them literally. Finding their lives inextricably entwined with the turbulent fortunes of their ancestors, Alix and Jared discover that only by righting the wrongs of the past can they hope to be together.

A bit too long, not as romantic as her other books. The writing was just OK, very basic at times. I didn't love it as much as some of her other books.

I know that I am in a minority in wanting to read romance that doesn't include sex; sex is wonderful but I don't really want to read about it - I much prefer that it be implicit or implied or hinted at than described.I loved the Nantucket setting and I liked Alix and Jared. It did strike me as a bit unbelievable that Alix's mother Victoria got away with all her manipulations and lies (and what I would call theft) without even an arguement...Tavia Gilbert was great in her voice for Alix; her other voices could have done with a bit more personality.

The book was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would. I'm usually not into paranormal/supernatural plot lines. They require too much suspension of disbelief for my liking. However, True Love actually kept me interested. The characters were so well-written and fleshed out. I really did get a sense for who Alix and Jared are as people and thought their relationship worked. The supporting cast, though quite large, was also very well fleshed out. Even the ghost of a grandfather had a complete background and a clear purpose within the plot line. The supporting cast was sometimes a bit much. There were a couple of times where I had to flip back to remember who was who, but this happened less often as the book progressed. The supernatural plot line surprisingly was not a big part of the story. It kind of existed in the background and did provide a means for the hero and heroine to cross paths. But the whole mystery of Valentina and the grandfather Caleb's ghost were on the back burner and the truth isn't revealed until the epilogue. The main focus of the story is Alix and Jared's relationship and their road to happily every after. Though the ride wasn't entirely smooth, I appreciated that there wasn't some huge misunderstanding causing them to break up or keeping them apart. The two had their ups and downs, but they stuck it out together, which is what true love is all about in my opinion. What keeps this from being a five star book is first and foremost, the supernatural elements. Even though it is a secondary plot, it is a huge turn off for me. The bits about reincarnation were also a stretch for me and made it seem as if everything was destined to happen a certain way. Additionally, there were a lot of little loose ends that weren't completely explained such as did Alix no longer have to live the rest of the year in Addy's house? Why didn't Victoria notice something was up in the end, especially when she was constantly being called by a different name? What is the deal with Lexie's boss Roger (I'm sure those two are getting their own book, but it wasn't fair to tease us so much)? I realize these are little things, but they kept me from thoroughly enjoying the story.

A gentle, slow-moving love story set on Nantucket, with a resident ghost and a lot of family lies to uncover. When a family friend leave budding architect Alix a year to spend on Nantucket in a haunted house, Alix has n plans for romance. Or for ghosts, for that matter. A newly graduated architect, she plans to work on her portfolio.Rock-star caliber architect Jared Kingsley begrudges Alix her year in what should be his house... that is until he meets her. Suddenly a family history of lies and deception show every sign of blowing up a budding romance. Of course, with a title like "True Love" a HEA is a forgone conclusion. Not completely insipid, and if you're a Devereaux fan, it's fun to catch cameos of past novels' heroes & heroines.

This is a first read of Jude Deveraux, I put it off for a bit because I don't typically read romance but I have found this novel to be a breath of fresh air and I have read of Nantucket area before. I think the plot is very good and has kept my attention while reading. True Love is worth reading for any Nantucketer and Non-Islander alike!!

I was pleasantly surprised by True Love. I found it very reminiscent of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. The characters were varied and believable and the plot very well planned considering the Ghost element. I loved Caleb. He was the heart of the story. A very good read.

I was completely unimpressed with this book. Parts of it seemed rather incoherent and/or contrived. (For instance, a random occurrence of babysitting, unrelated to anything else, just to show that the hero likes kids. Really?) The paranormal element and reincarnation was just weird. I didn't love the characters. And the heroine was obsessed with the hero's lower lip -- if I had read just ONE MORE TIME about his lower lip, I would have run screaming into the night. This one is going straight into my yard sale pile. Maybe I'll be lucky and get 50 cents for it. But unfortunately, I'll never get my wasted time back.

review Thanks Librarything for a free book in exchange for a review. I love it, this book was well written and suspenseful. Characters had a great storyline and chemistry. World building for Nantucket was wonderful, and seemed like a place people would love to visit. I love how the book pulled in characters from another series and everyone had a HEA. Overall entertainment was four stars.

The story of Alix, a recently graduated architect, who is staying in Nantucket for a year as the result of a will. She meets Jared Kingsley, who is in reality the famous architect Montgomery. Of course, a romance blooms. The author threw into the mix the ghost of Jared's ancestor, Caleb, who is waiting to be reunited with the love of his life, Valentina. Alix is to try to discover what happened to her as she had disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The various characters in the story are reincarnations of people who lived when Valentina and Caleb did. Alix is also planning the wedding of her best friend, to be held on Nantucket. The first part of the book was introducing the romance between Alix and Jared, when was predictable. They then moved in together. ( I am not a fan of books that describe the sexual activity of the characters. Just tell me he carried her off to the bedroom. I can figure out the rest. Pages describing his foreplay, etc. detract from the plot. Margaret Mitchell got it right in Gone With the Wind" ). The ghost and the search for Valentina were thrown in. The ending was predictable and seemed a bit rushed. The killer wrote about the murder in the victim's diary? Really? The reincarnation of everyone, but no explanation as to why they all needed to be there for the ghost to have closure. Caleb and Valentina/Victoria's reunion was disappointing after the build up in the book. In general, the story was a nice one, which could have been even better. I have not been compensated in any way (other than being given a copy of this book to review) and my opinion on the book is entirely my own.

Jude Deveraux books used to be clever and witty and while romantic and a bit unbelievable...they allowed you to suspend belief for a bit and just enjoy a good story. The Summerhouse is a gem, Knight in Shining Armor is pretty good as well, but this...this is dreck. It is weak, repetitive, and boring. The characters are shallow, the plot and contrivances don't hold together, and the setting is too saccharine. Also...not to knock the publisher, but...this was on our April Early reviewers list when in fact it came out a year ago.

True Loveby Jude DeverauxJude Deveraux introduces her Nantucket Brides Trilogy with the novel True Love. We are introduced to the Kingsley family whose roots go back to the founding of Nantucket. Among them is one of our main characters, Jared, a handsome, successful, single architect. Alix, our other main character, is not a native and in fact has not been to Nantucket since she was four years old. She has just finished architectural school as a star student and will be spending a year on Nantucket in the Kingsley House. Things begin to sizzle when Alix realizes the gorgeous Jared Kingsley is the same person as Jared Kinsley Montgomery, the infamous architect. Add a 200 year old grandfather and our story is sizzling.Deveraux's descriptive writing is beautiful whether describing an architectural structure or a person. She christens us with the beauty, culture and history of Nantucket. Her characters are interesting though she does not develop them very deeply. This is a great romance as well as a beautiful story of family and community. The storyline itself becomes a bit haphazard with the shifting from the current day story with Alix and Jared to the complex history, 200 years of it, and trying to solve a mystery from 200 years ago. Along with that was the continual revelation of who someone was in a previous life. We seem to have the same few people in a constant state of recycle. It became confusing and a bit eerie taking away from the story which was a shame. Deveraux created a beautiful story of the Kingsley family and the others on Nantucket giving us a history not only of the island but of those who call it home. I throughly enjoyed this book and look forward to visiting Nantucket again soon. Bring on Book 2!NOTE: I received an Advance Reading Copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes I just need a good romance. TRUE LOVE was amazing. Alix Madsen has come to spend a year on Nantucket. She has just finished school to be an architect and is looking for a place to work on her portfolio to use to find a job. Little does she know that famous architect Jared Montgomery Kingsley is the house's owner and has been tasked with helping Alix get along on the island.Alix is the child of divorce. Her father Ken was a builder and an architect and now teaches at a university. Alix takes after him in her love of building and architecture. Her mother is a famous novelist who is as outrageous, charming, and flamboyant as she could be. Alix loves her. Both of her parents have been keeping secrets from her for her whole life. Alix's mother Victoria has spent the month of August each year on Nantucket reading Kingsley family diaries to mine for plots for her best selling novels. Alix thought that her mother spent the time in Colorado. Alix's father has also been a frequent visitor to Nantucket where he was a mentor to young Jared. He helped straighten him out after his father died. Both Ken and Victoria had a large part in Jared's life and career but Alix knew nothing about it. Now that Alix is on the island, Jared is falling in love with her but promised her father that he'd leave her alone. Then there is the whole ghost thing. Captain Caleb Kingsley has been haunting the house for 202 years searching for his lost love Valentina. Conditions are finally right to resolve that mystery.I loved the characters - both main and side - though I did get a little irritated with the machinations of Alix's mother. I loved that Alix saw the real Jared inside the Great Man of Architecture that the rest of the world saw. I can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy and find out how Lexie and Toby find their true loves. And I will be very disappointed if they are not the stars of the other two books in this trilogy.

As enjoyable as always when reading a Jude Deveraux story. What I love about these stories is how Ms. Deveraux connects her characters pulling them all into more than just friends and acquaintances but as a family and that's the reason her books are so successful - family is everything and that resonates throughout this story. That and the fact that True Love is a given, the fairy tale kind of love we all scoff at but secretly long for.

Alix Madsen has been willed a Nantucket house for a year with the hope that she will find out more about a missing woman. Jared Kingsley is currently living in the house Alix has been willed and he'll receive it after the year is up. He hopes to leave before Alix has had a chance to arrive but forces are against him and want Alix to be on the island. Alix soon finds she remembers things about the house and the island, as if she'd been there before and belonged there. As Alix and Jared become closer we meet Jared's many on-island relatives and learn more about Alix's parents and her friend Izzy. Don't read this if you don't believe in happy ever after's but do read it if you like life to work out and feel as if it is meant to be.

This was my first book by Jude Deeraux. I enjoyed the book just not blown away by it. We all want our TRUE LOVE and that is what everyone in this book gets.Alix, Jared, Ken, Victoria, Toby, Caleb, Jelly and so many more find their true love in this book. This is mainly the story of Alix and Jarod. Alix hasn't been on Nantucket since she was about 5 years old. She has to go to Nantucket because of a will from a woman she had met when she was a little girl.Jared is the man whose house she will be staying in. He is not happy about it and plans to leave before she arrives. But Izzy and Alix arrive earlier and when they walk past Jared Montgomery they are in awe and the sadness Alix was feeling is gone.It was a cute story. And most of the stuff is planned by a ghost that has been in the house for over 200 years. He too will get his true love.

Okay love story, though I found some of the descriptions of the characters stereotypical - "all women are this, all men like this," kind of thing. It was steamy enough, though! The reader, however, was awful. The read the main character as a flighty, breathy idiot, despite her being written as an independent, ambitious and intelligent woman.

I've been a fan of Jude Deveraux since I was a teenager. So I was happy to win an advanced copy of this book. The story takes place in the modern day "country" of Nantucket full of architecture, back-stories and romance. Loads of characters and island descriptors, which will be a good base for this series, however- to me- this made the book a bit boring and hard to get into for the first 1/3 of the book. Then I started to get more interested in the story and by the last 1/8 of the book I was really enjoying the story and its ending. I loved how she brought in some of her past characters (which if you don't know them, it doesn't detract from the story.. just a plus for her fans, IMO). I will say that I've read better from Ms. Deveraux (my favorites being Knight in Shining Armor and Always/Forever series) especially in this type of romance with a 'fantasy' twist HOWEVER the ending and the hints of what may happen to her secondary characters showcased in this book will lead me to read the next book in this series.I'd recommend for those that enjoy modern romance, with some mystery thrown in and of course for fans of Ms. Deveraux.Received this book via LibraryThing.com Early Reviewer giveaway.

When Alix finds herself the resident of a haunted Nantucket mansion for a year after a nasty break-up, she has no idea how much her life is going to change. Charged with solving a 200-year-old mystery, Alix is charmed by the island as well as the house's ghostly inhabitant. Then there's the guy in the guest house, Jared, who just happens to be Alix's hero. Why does the ghost of Captain Caleb still walk? Can Alix solve the mystery of what happened to Caleb's beloved Valentina while at the same time opening her own heart to love with Jared? Will true love truly conquer all?I had read some of Jude Deveraux's books many years ago but drifted away from that genre. I was very pleasantly surprised at how quickly I got caught up in this story. It has so many elements that I enjoy in a good read--romance, mystery, humor, and just enough paranormal happenings to spice things up. I enjoyed all the descriptions of Nantucket, although I do think that too much time was spent describing all the meals they characters ate (it's a wonder they could still fit into their clothes with all that rich food they ate!). All of the family connections were a bit hard to keep up with, but I imagine they will be expanded upon in future volumes.

Jude Deveraux was once one of my favorite authors. I'm not sure if her writing has changed or my taste. To put it short, I didn't like this book. I had high hopes and liked the concept of the story but the execution wasn't there. Have you heard the phrase "info dump"? That's what is happening there. The author will introduce a new character and then spend pages giving background information about that character. Nothing develops naturally. The characters were fine but there were so many secrets being kept. Secrets that didn't need to be secrets! I just couldn't get myself to care about what was going to happen. There are other trilogies that do the island bride thing better. Much better. I'm sad that it was so disappointing.

Under the terms of the will of a family friend, Alix Madsen, a recently graduated architect, is invited to live in the family home on Nantucket for a year. While she is there, she is free to try to unravel the Montgomery family mystery - but only if she chooses to do so. After that year, the house will go to Jared Montgomery, a world renowned architect. Sparks fly and Alix and Jared fall in love. This story is interesting because of extensive details about the buildings and the people who live on Nantucket. Alix also discovers that many things in her childhood were not as they seemed so there is an element of mystery. Add Caleb, the 200 year old ghost of Jared's grandfather and this makes for a very interesting story. I received copy to review from NetGalley.

True LovebyJude DeverauxMy" in a nutshell" summary...Hmmm...Alix is a budding architect. She has to spend a year on Nantucket because she can speak to a ghost and she has a mystery to solve! My thoughts after reading this book...I have not read a Jude Deveraux book in years and while I would not want to read one after another...I am so happy that I discovered this book! It's a lovely fun romantic ghostly story that takes place on Nantucket.Alix gets a free year on Nantucket to fine tune her skills as an architect. This was engineered by her mother and her father. Her mother is a very successful and beautiful novelist. Her father is an architect and teacher. Alix is unaware of the deep connections that both of her parents have to the island. Nantucket is also the home of the most famous architect ever and Alix's idol...Jarod. He is attractive, mysterious and you know that he will be "someone's" love interest. There is also a ghost or two and a secret to unravel. It's a totally awesome story! What I loved the most about this book...Oh my...Nantucket as a setting is simply lovely! The shops, the foods, the ferry, the houses, the ocean, and the descriptions of the insides of the houses were so incredible!I also loved the story line...it had mystery and sexy bits...and just enough of both! What I did not love...I can't say that I didn't love anything...I didn't think I would like the speaking to the ghost parts but that was actually fun!Final thoughts...I loved this sweet romantic romp...it had mystery, surprises and those appealing sexy bits!

The story brings Montgomery-Taggerts's future generation now involved in a somewhat supernatural experience.Adelaide Kingsley died, and left in her will that Alix Madsen, a new degree in architecture, should reside in her home for a year, on the island of Nantucket. No requirement as to what she would do there, but Alix had a gift. And this gift would help to find out what happened to Valentina, 200 years ago.The novel is filled with great dialogue, mystery, bucolic scenes that make you want to travel to know the island, a couple of strong protagonists, and a friendly ghost .4,5 stars!!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. Jude Deveraux is the author of some of my favorite books but I struggled to get into this book. I knew how it would end from the start. It was like reading a book I had already read. It did not remind me so much of the author's earlier works but of Nora Roberts (an author I no longer read because she repeats herself). I hope Ms. Deveraux will go back to writing historical romance. I have not enjoyed her contemporary ones very much, this book least of all. The one thing I did like is that I felt like Victoria was somewhat based on Jude herself

This is the start of a new trilogy, of Nantucket brides, rich in reincarnated characters and ghost presence. This story centers around a promising architectural student, the daughter of divorced parents, her mom a renowned author, her dad, an architecture professor, who hold secrets about their daughter's childhood. There is the influence of past and present occupants of a special home, where the main character spent eventful time as a child and will spend the next year as a provision of the will of its most recent owner. The story is interesting but it begins to drag by two-thirds of the book. I think it would have been a more compelling read to condense the story. For fans of the great Montgomery characters in this author's earlier books, the male character continues that tradition.

I received this book as a giveaway, and as a Jude Deveraux fan, I was thrilled. I love the intertwining of past lives and modern, and in spite of a somewhat cheesy resolution to the romance, I devoured this book like a yummy chocolate bar. What Jude Deveraux does really well is write an emotionally realistic story about two people falling in love. What she does not do well is to try to incorporate some sort of mystery into her romance novels. She's also prone to using unreasonable coincidences and circumstances in order to bring her two lead characters together. Alix Madsen has just finished architecture school and she is brilliant at her chosen field. Jared Montgomery Kingsley is a famous architect, who, unbeknownst to Alix, benefitted greatly from Alix's parents influence in his life. Jared's aunt has just died and her will stipulates that Alix is to live in her house on Nantucket for a year and try to solve the mystery of what happened to a Kingsley ancestor named Valentina. Alix goes to the island having no idea that both her parents spent massive amounts of time there and are great friends of everyone living there. She adjusts to becoming privy to these revelations rather better than expected and Jared, who was not looking forward to babysitting a starry-eyed young protege, likes her more than he intended. This is all very well and good, but for the addition of a 200-year old ghost and the aforementioned mystery. Not enough attention is given to these details and the conclusion to the mystery is rather abrupt and heavy-handed. Fortunately, as alluded to earlier, Jared and Alix have great chemistry, witty dialogue and it is obvious they are perfect for each other. One last nitpick: the story was frequently difficult to follow, as Deveraux has a habit of beginning with some present action, and then describing some earlier interaction, such as from the night before, without much in the way of transition. It's possible that this reader was a little distracted while reading, or possibly reading too quickly, but I often found myself confused as to who was speaking and when this conversation was taking place. One last bit of praise: I love how Deveraux puts references and allusions to previous books and characters in her current novels. It gives her writing additional continuity, and it seems that the dates continue to match up. For example, works of hers which were "contemporary" in the late 90's feature characters whose children show up in her later novels at the age one would expect here in the 2010's.All that said, I have to say I am a huge fan of Deveraux, and always will be. This book did nothing to dissuade me.
