Description

Inspired by The Hobbit, and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that Tolkien created to provide “the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues.” From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien’s great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe—hobbits, elves, and wizards—step colorfully forth from the pages. Rob Inglis’ narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

About the author

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State, but at the age of four he and his brother were taken back to England by their mother. After his father’s death the family moved to Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham. Tolkien spent a happy childhood in the countryside and his sensibility to the rural landscape can clearly be seen in his writing and his pictures.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first volume in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Saga. I decided that even though this was my first reading of this book, that I would go with an audio version. I knew enough of the story and characters that it was very easy to follow along and it wasn’t long before I was totally absorbed into Middle Earth. The rich voice of the reader, Rob Inglis, totally enhanced the story and added to it’s charm. The foundation of the series is built in this issue, the characters have been introduced and we have been given a good idea of their purpose and ambitions. The theme of good versus evil has been set and the mission to keep the dark lord, Saron from obtaining the last ring and dominating all of Middle Earth is underway. The fellowship of Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, and humans have been set on their path to save their world.Since it was first published in 1954 the influence that this fantasy generates has been unrivaled. The Fellowship of the Ring is the beginning of an epic tale of friendship, heroism and adventure, and I am looking forward to continuing on with the second volume.

Why did I take so long to read this book! Have given myself a good talking to! Excellent read that very much stands the test of time, and the film overall seems to have been very faithful to the book which is most unusual. Can't wait to continue on with the trilogy. Please don't commit my mistake and leave these in the to be read pile for years!

I enjoyed this more than The Hobbit and more as the story went on. As a fan of the movies it has taken me quite awhile to get to the first book. What surprised me was how the land is a character in the book, it has it's own spirit and will. Enjoyable.

I really enjoyed the journey that the fellowship took and am sad to see them part ways. Although I don't believe that will be then end of it. I'm so glad to be a part of this chapter a day read because I don't think I would have read this series if not for this prompt. I'm excited for the journey to continue. I love Sam. Such a true friend. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

How I managed to go so long without reading this book is insane. I am a HUGE fan of the movies, and finally --- FINALLY --- listened to the audiobook for The Fellowship of the Ring. The narration and sound effects were amazing; it reminded me fondly of radio programs from back in the 30-40s...I love old radio shows!
