Editor's Note

A new business book classic…

Just as Nike’s swoosh symbol is one of the most recognizable symbols of excellence around the world, this memoir from the shoe company’s founder, Phil Knight, has quickly become one of the most-lauded, must-read business books of all time.

Description

In this candid and riveting memoir, for the first time ever, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company's early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world's most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands.

In 1962, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his father and created a company with a simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan. Selling the shoes from the trunk of his lime green Plymouth Valiant, Knight grossed $8,000 his first year. Today, Nike's annual sales top $30 billion. In an age of startups, Nike is the ne plus ultra of all startups, and the swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe-spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable symbols in the world today.

But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always remained a mystery. Now, for the first time, in a memoir that is candid, humble, gutsy, and wry, he tells his story, beginning with his crossroads moment. At twenty-four, after backpacking around the world, he decided to take the unconventional path, to start his own business-a business that would be dynamic, different.

Knight details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream-along with his early triumphs. Above all, he recalls the formative relationships with his first partners and employees, a ragtag group of misfits and seekers who became a tight-knit band of brothers. Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything.

An inspiring and fascinating memoir from the creator of Nike. Phil Knight spares no details in this in depth look about how he created the Nike empire as a young naive guy in his 20s. It was anything but smooth sailing, equal parts business and personal, this memoir touches on all the struggles the young fledgling company had in its first 2 decades. It pretty much ends in 1980 when the company went public, because that is when the company finally took off. Brilliantly narrated to convey the emotions and excitement of the Nike culture. After listening to this book I have soo much respect for Nike and its creator. I've always seen it around, it's one of the largest companies ever, but I've never appreciated how hard they worked to get to the point they are at now. Insanely inspiring, they've definitely got a new customer.

Really inspiring book teaching you to reach your goals, try and do. I was wondering what kind of person could have created such movement as Nike became: boots, clothes and sport events that say “you may do it. Don’t stop going”.

Growing up my dad was a huge fan of Prefontaine so my childhood memories are still around those stories and the sports I played where my parents were right along side of me. My grandpa was a security guard for NIKE back in the 80s and growing up in Beaverton, we are fortunate to be surrounded by the company. Also getting the inside view from the author himself - someone who I know of but never have had a chance to meet in person, it reminded me of why I love NIKE so much.

Shoe dog is much better than I expected. When my book club said this is what we’re reading, I thought oh,an autobiography of a guy in the shoe business. Riveting is the best word I can come up with. Suspenseful, you always think he’s out of the woods and then another huge problem pops up. Phil Knight is an interesting character and someone who is making the world a better place. Keep it up.

I was surprised by how much I thoroughly loved this book. I am an Oregonian and grew up with Nike. The Señorita Cortez was the first pair of shoes I bought with money saved up from my 13th birthday. It was the most I had ever spent, having come from a very modest background. I was always proud to share the same hometown as Nike. I even went to the same High School as Matthew Knight, at the same time, but I was a few years behind. I met him once and have struggled to remember the context of the group discussion. I was sad to hear about his struggles and their strained relationship. I truly felt his pain.

I was so surprised to hear the Blue Ribbon Story and background. I had absolutely no idea about the Tiger connection. I loved that “Buck” Night is well read and an academic. I don’t know what I thought about him before, but this book made me feel bizarrely proud of this intrepid entrepreneur who managed to build the most amazing team of people around him. Of course I knew of Bowerman & Prefontaine-Oregon legends-we all knew these names. ( at least in my day?) But my absolutely cracking favorite was Johnson. Throughout the entire book I kept yelling out loud- “I love Johnson!” The eccentricity, the absolute dedication and individualism are to admire and adore. It was a joy to hear about the many different characters that launched Nike.

However, as a young female University student, I felt angry with Nike during the Asian labor scandals. I could not understand how they could let that happen. Phil Knight, in this memoir, seems to have eventually understood the importance of admitting his culpability in how it was handled and communicated. Reading this book shed at least a more understanding light on what else was going on and how in many instances they were cutting edge and improving conditions-but just not enough.

I really enjoyed the trials of tribulations of my hometown company which were completely new to me. I am also the only one of four siblings that did not attend U of O?, so that might explain some of it. I highly recommend this book. Keep spending your money on improving education for young girls around the world and your legacy will live forever Phil and Penny Knight! Bravo.
