Meanwhile, in a small Michigan harbor town an hour outside Chicago, a mysterious woman appears in the quiet coffee shop where eighteen-year-old Alex Gallo works as a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to her charm and beauty, but what starts as an innocent crush quickly spirals int
As Quinn searches for answers about Esther, and Alex is drawn further under the stranger's spell, master of suspense Mary Kubica takes readers on a taut and twisted thrill ride that builds to a stunning conclusion and shows that no matter how fast and far we run, the past always catches up with us in the end.

- (5/5)Very well written and little idea of the twisted ending.
- (1/5)Disjointed story. When it came together it didn’t feel like a “twist” but rather a forced ending to try and make sense of it. Honestly, after that I’m not in a hurry to ready any other books by this author.
- (4/5)One of her weaker works, a very slow burn and the end was rushed, it didn’t tie it all together

I don’t know what was worse the story line with a bunch of pointless filler material or the voices. Alex’s character voice was so freaking annoying, sounding like an old man although Alex is only 18. What a terrible experience.1 person found this helpful

This story ended up being great but I'm giving it 4 stars because the first half CRAWLED ON. It's all great writing and enjoyable. But around a third of the way through, I started wondering if anything was every going to happen and where it was going. It finally picked up about half way through. There were a lot of things that were easy to predict but enough surprises to keep me going.4 people found this helpful
