Harpagon sacrifie tout ce qui l'entoure à l'objet unique de son attention : sa fortune, son bien placé ou ses pièces d'or enfermées dans sa 'cassette'. Il lui sacrifie sa progéniture ou ses domestiques, réduits à la mendicité et au vol, sa maison inconfortable à l'extrême, sa réputation comme son train de vie, sa santé. Il abandonne sa fille à son voisin Anselme, car celui-ci n'en exige aucune dot. Il se laisse dévorer par un désir paroxystique et paradoxal de posséder l'argent, de le saisir, de le manipuler pour ce qu'il représente : la promesse de pouvoir disposer de chaque chose et de chaque être. Il amasse par son argent les probabilités de jouir de tout, mais demeure incapable de passer à l'acte de la dépense et d'en profiter.
