About this audiobook

An unsolved crime pits a desperate woman against a relentless killer in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s heart-stopping novel of psychological suspense…

Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina’s screams. And she still suffers the guilt of running away in fear and resents being interrogated as a suspect in the immediate aftermath. Now Kaitlin has only one way to assuage the pain and nightmares—by interviewing everyone associated with the unsolved crime for a podcast that could finally bring closure to a case gone cold.

But when a woman Kaitlin questions is later found stabbed to death, she fears that she’s drawn a killer out of hiding. It’s Detective John Adler’s fear that the murders have only just begun. Now his job is to keep Kaitlin safe.

As a bond between Kaitlin and Adler builds, the past closes in just as fast—and it’s darker than Kaitlin remembers. Soon, her wish will come true. She’s going to find out exactly what happened to Gina. Someone has been dying to tell her.

I rarely give books a five out of five rating. This one deserves it, though. There was suspense all the way through to the end. The characters were interesting and believable. There was romance, but (as I prefer in romantic suspense stories, personally) it was in the background and not central to the story, per se. There were a couple of good sex scenes (never hurts), but the story wasn't contingent upon them and they didn't occupy too much ink. Not mushy, but you do root for the protagonists.

The story was nice and quick however the audio messed up cause it kept cutting to change the disk.
Still the story was not bad, good for days where you want to listen to a quick mystery but not too heavy.

Decent book. It was not the biggest mystery ever and it was a bit predictable but it was interesting.

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author. (netgalley) Kaitlin Roe is has decided that she is going to find out who had kidnapped her cousin Gina 14 years ago. She feels guilty for running as the abducter had told her to do. She didn't have many answers for police and she was drunk on top of it all so she was on their radar. Now as she is asking questions someone wants to shut it up and she finally gets the attention of the police who had no real interest in the case since it was a cold case. Since a woman is killed they woke up and decided to look into it but she is back on their radar. Detective Adler doesn't think she has anything to do with it and is extremely interested in the Kaitlin. So who is it?

I liked this book a lot. Brittany Pressley is an amazing narrator and I find that her voice makes listening/following along with the story much easier. At a point in the story I was almost able to predict what was going to happen. I’ve read a lot of books with the same order of events except just with different names, places etc. I DO recommend this book but like I said FOR ME this was nothing new and was just too predictable. The end wrapped up pretty quickly and there was resolve but I really love when there’s prolonged moments of tension and a ton of curveballs and the sorts.. and now I’m rambling! Lol

This is a mediocre mystery with a touch of romance.
Kaitlin Roe is tortured by the disappearance of her cousin some 14 years ago and is back to the place where it all happened. Her plan is to make a podcast on her cousin Gina with the overall aim of finding her. Her plan does not work as she intended when one of the key witnesses from the night of Gina's disappearance dies violently.

I found the resolution far-fetched and there were too many unsavory characters. The pieces of the puzzle came together in the end but it was all too forced and artificial. The romance aspect felt also a bit disingenuous. I rate it 3 stars because of the pacing aspect and the structure of unfolding the story but the plotting, characters and the rest left me wanting. If I remember this book in a month or two it will be because of the improbability of its events and resolution.

Her Last Word is a fast-paced, suspenseful, mystery that not only investigates a 14-year-old cold-case involving an abducted teenager, but takes you on a hunt for an obsessed serial killer consumed with revenge. When Kaitlyn Roe returns to Virginia to try and get closure into the abduction and presumed death of her cousin Gina, she opens a can of worms that brings more than she bargained for.

The characters are flawed, scarred, and tenacious. Kaitlyn and the other two girls who spent the last night with Gina are all suffering from Gina's disappearance. They don't want to talk to Kaitlyn and it seems they might be hiding things. Detective John Adler has his own issues to deal with, but has an attraction to Kaitlyn that he doesn't understand. When it seems she might be in danger, he steps up their relationship to protect her. He is smart, tenacious and loyal. The plot is complex and is told through a mixture of narration and interviews for Kaitlyn's blog. They mesh well together to give a compelling story with lots of twists, turns, red herrings, violence, sexual attraction, and murder. Mary Burton has written an entertaining suspenseful mystery with just a bit of romance thrown in to lighten the story a bit. As I have come to expect from this author, this was story that I had a hard time putting down, it did not disappoint. The publisher, Montlake Romance, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The rating, ideas and opinions are my own.

Her Last Word is a book that has a face paced, intense storyline. The police procedural part tells the story of a cold case that has the potential to tie into a current case. It was interesting to me to see how Detective John Adler was able to take a case that had been all but forgotten for so many years and use the clues from that story to bring back to life, working to solve it, and working to use the clues to solve past and present murders. This is a romantic suspense book with twists and turns that I never saw coming. I loved the different timelines between the present story and Kaitlin's interviews. Sometimes the storylines didn't come together when going between the two of them as smoothly as I thought they should but that was part of what happen. The fact that the notes that Kaitlin got did not always match what the police were finding out. The romance part of the story was minimal and I liked that it was not at the front of the storyline. That allowed me to focus on the murders and try to figure out who dun-it. I will say I never guessed correctly.

Her Last Word by Mary BurtonCold Case vs Current Case…can stirring up the past bring out a killer…and…if it does…is it the old killer, a serial killer or a new one who will become a serial killer? This was a tidily plotted story with 30 visits to the past interspersed with happenings in the present that explored murder(s) over a decade ago along with current murders. Kaitlin, cousin to Gina, has a bee in her bonnet to find her cousin – dead or alive – and let her rest. With a podcast in mind Kaitlin interviews many, stirs up past emotions and deals with a few bugaboos of her own. Kaitlin is all grown up, has a degree, is teaching at the university and has an agenda…will her agenda be met? AND John Adler, recently on the job again after medical leave, is there when an interlinking murder impacts many lives…including Kaitlin’s. How John decides to move forward with his current case while also looking into the past is intriguing. There are hints, trails, bad guys present and past and a mystery to figure out that left me awake till nearly three in the morning. Need I say more? Did I enjoy this book? YesWould I recommend it? YesIs it believable? I think soThank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

I am a fan of this author's. The last several books have really been winners. While, I did like this book, I was not in love with it as I was the past several books. For me, I found my connection with Kaitlin and John but the story as a whole moved at a slow pace. There was not a lot happening. Yes, there was a killing but the details and the intensity of the investigation was not very hyped up. The killer stayed back and didn't appear too much in the lime light. In fact, I found the "interview tapes" more exciting then the story. I wanted more of a cat and mouse game. Yet, I will say that this is more character driven. I was cheering for Kaitlin that she was like a one woman crusader fighting for justice for her cousin, Gina. She would not give up no matter what the cost. Detective Adler is smart. Plus, I like that he did not discount Kaitlin and her theories. They did strike up a romance but it was subtle and not distracting from the story. Overall, this was an enjoyable read.
