Editor's Note

Book club pick…

Reese Witherspoon selected “Whisper Network” as her July 2019 book club pick. “This story is a workplace murder mystery that happens in today’s #MeToo era. It’s honest, timely and completely thrilling — I was so surprised to find out who the murderer was!” Witherspoon wrote on the club’s website.

Description

This program includes an author's note read by the author.

“If only you’d listened to us, none of this would have happened.”

Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita have worked at Truviv, Inc. for years. The sudden death of Truviv’s CEO means their boss, Ames, will likely take over the entire company. Each of the women has a different relationship with Ames, who has always been surrounded by whispers about how he treats women. Those whispers have been ignored, swept under the rug, hidden away by those in charge.

But the world has changed, and the women are watching this promotion differently. This time, when they find out Ames is making an inappropriate move on a colleague, they aren’t willing to let it go. This time, they’ve decided enough is enough.

Sloane and her colleagues’ decision to take a stand sets in motion a catastrophic shift in the office. Lies will be uncovered. Secrets will be exposed. And not everyone will survive. All of their lives — as women, colleagues, mothers, wives, friends, even adversaries — will change dramatically as a result.

Chandler Baker lives in Austin with her husband and toddler where she also works as a corporate attorney. She is the author of five young adult novels. Whisper Network is her adult debut.

Critic reviews

  • One part thriller, one part ripped-from-the-headlines, Chandler Baker's "Whisper Network" is a timely and relevant whodunnit set in the middle of the #MeToo movement. The story focuses on four women in a fictitious Dallas-based sports brand corporation who are each affected, to varying degrees, by the sudden and mysterious death of their CEO. When an ambitious upstart with a lecherous reputation is nominated to fill the role, the women wonder if it's time to step up and out the lout, even if it's at their own detriment. It's no surprise why Reese Witherspoon chose this as a pick for her Hello Sunshine Book Club — you'll definitely want to add this to your Halloween to-read list.

What an amazing book. The topics it touches on affect women of all ages, all over the world. I think this story will have any woman nodding in agreement because we've all experienced some form of harassment, abuse or discrimination, even from an early age. This book should be read in schools! I only wish I had read it when I was a kid.

Sorry to say this wasn’t my favorite. I felt like I listened for hours and hours before the story got anywhere. The message was good I just wasn’t a fan.

Every young woman should listen... especially as they enter the working world.

It was a good story line full of twist and turns. Too much cursing for my liking . Wasn’t necessary

A MUST read. Stop being afraid and stand up for yourself.
