Editor's Note

Catching fire…

Within a few tumultuous years, 10-year-old twins Bessie and Roland endure the dissolution of their family and the sudden death of their mom. But where other kids might deal with these traumas with tears and tantrums, the manifestation of the twins’ angst is a bit unusual: they catch on fire. (They’re fine, but other people, furniture, etc., are not.) As you might expect from the premise, this is an absurd and very funny book. What you might not expect is that it’s often quite heartwarming, as well.

Description

Kevin Wilson’s best book yet — a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other — and stay cool — while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her — urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet — a most unusual story of parental love.

Heartwarming but predictable. None of the characters will ever be memorable but the novel is okay like an afternoon hallmark channel show.

Interesting concept, spontaneous human combustion. I found the writing style refreshing and humorous. Very "modern," I suppose one could say. The performance was excellent. I loved the way she changed voices just enough to know it was a different character speaking but not so much that the narrative and conversations were confusing. Really, really enjoyed this story.

Good story. Good character development. Nice to see the main character portrayed with real emotions that are not always easy to express or understand.
And it's nice that it wasn't a love story between a man and woman

  • (5/5)
Humorous and written very-well! I loved the narration ( she was amazing)!
  • (5/5)
Enjoyed this book. It was insightful, the dialogue and thoughts of the main character humorous and felt honest. The narrator did well to give each character nuance. Just enough twists and turns without invoking anxiety or dread of impending tragedy, despite the fantastic premise thereby correlating better with the day-to-day lives of the majority of us in the real world.

Very interesting. I enjoyed it a lot, much more than I expected.
  • (3/5)
Unusual and different book. Enjoyed the narration of the book.
  • (4/5)
Not a half bad book would have been nice if the book kinda kept going to reveal how the twins and their brother grew up, but all in all enjoyed the book kinda seemed like a whimsical fairytale set in modern times cute book made me smile
  • (5/5)
A really interesting story with multiple layers and ways to look at things. There is a lot to unpack here and this is certainly a story I will think about for a long time. Bessie and Roland are delightful and our narrator is just messed up enough to be true to herself but not quite perfect. The audio book narrator is amazing and really captured the voices of each character.

An engaging and interesting story. A little twist I didn’t expect. The neediness of Lillian made me crazy at times but it was probably like real life. I thought the narrator did an amazing job. This is a very enjoyable journey.
