About this audiobook
For all who have suffered great loss of heart, home, health or family; true home and genuine lasting love can be found.
When a horrific battle rips through Gettysburg, the farm of Union widow Liberty Holloway is disfigured into a Confederate field hospital, bringing her face to face with unspeakable suffering - and a Confederate scout who awakens her long dormant heart.
While Liberty's future crumbles as her home is destroyed, the past comes rushing back to Bella, a former slave and Liberty's hired help, when she finds herself surrounded by Southern soldiers, one of whom knows the secret that would place Liberty in danger if revealed.
In the wake of shattered homes and bodies, Liberty and Bella struggle to pick up the pieces the battle has left behind. Will Liberty be defined by the tragedy in her life, or will she find a way to triumph over it?
Inspired by first-person accounts from women who lived in Gettysburg during the battle and its aftermath, Widow of Gettysburg is Book 2 in the Heroines Behind the Lines series.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love how she weaves history into the fictional story. I am 79 years old and learned more history reading her book than I learned in school.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the second book in this series, and I recommend it and thoroughly enjoyed it, as I did the first. That said, I feel I should mention a trigger warning. In both books, there is a rape, or near rape scene. They're done well and with great sensitivity, with very few details, and absolutely no portrayal of the actual act, but some will find these scenes disturbing, and should be prepared for some raw emotion (in my humble opinion). In both cases, they are definitely a part of the story, not just added for no reason, and in the end, the author does a fabulous job of walking her characters through their emotions, and grief
and growth aided by others who care deeply and are willing to sacrifice to help. Faith plays a HUGE part throughout the books, and many believer learn how to accept themselves as beloved by the Lord, made perfectly and forgiven by Him. She covers a lot of ground in these books, and I would think (perhaps older?) teens would be greatly encouraged to live for and follow the Lord with greater commitment and love following the reading of these moving tales. Great for any age! I have found them inspirational as I long to know how to help, understand, and pray for those even now, who are living in the midst of a desperate situation during absolutely horrific wars my heart goes out to those suffering about the world. May books like this give us courage and insight
The historical and cultural details, punctuated by fascinating tidbits from real journals, speeches, newspapers, and much more make this the best kind of historical Christian fiction, and I'm eager to read the third book in the series! (And then the fourth!)
An epilogue explains historical happenings in a little more depth and reveals who certain characters were meant to represent, and which are fictional, though based on someone or on a conglomeration of interesting folks.
Just LOVE learning good history this way.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent story that made the battle of Gettysburg and Civil War era come alive to me! This book made me grateful for the freedoms and peace we experience every day in our modern times in the U.S. Strong character development and page turning suspense kept me glued to the last page, while educating me about a period in history that school textbooks had not really taught me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was written with excellence! It is one of the best books I’ve ever read! This was possibly because of the countless hours poured into it including so many factual accounts about the war. Well done!!
