Remarkable healing…

Oprah wants you to stop asking people the judgy question “What’s wrong with you?” and instead initiate a supportive conversation with “What happened to you?” In this powerful personal and scientific exploration of the lasting impact of trauma, Oprah joins forces with child trauma expert and neuroscientist Dr. Bruce Perry. Together they explore how a deceptively simple shift in perspective can pave the way for remarkable healing.

Description

"[Oprah Winfrey and Bruce D. Perry] are both capable, likable narrators who are sincerely engaged with their subject matter...The performances of these two humanitarians make this a must-hear for anyone recovering from their traumatic past." -- AudioFile Magazine

This program is read by the authors.

Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand.

“Through this lens we can build a renewed sense of personal self-worth and ultimately recalibrate our responses to circumstances, situations, and relationships. It is, in other words, the key to reshaping our very lives.”—Oprah Winfrey

This audiobook is going to change the way you see your life.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question.

Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Here, Winfrey shares stories from her own past, understanding through experience the vulnerability that comes from facing trauma and adversity at a young age. In conversation throughout the audiobook, she and Dr. Perry focus on understanding people, behavior, and ourselves. It’s a subtle but profound shift in our approach to trauma, and it’s one that allows us to understand our pasts in order to clear a path to our future—opening the door to resilience and healing in a proven, powerful way.

Valuable information for anyone working with those who have suffered trauma or are healing from trauma themselves, presented in a clear, concise and heartfelt manner. Thank you Oprah and Dr. Perry.

This was a really compelling listen, made all the more powerful by the fact it was narrated by Oprah and Dr. Perry themselves. I did not personally experience childhood trauma, but understanding the impact of trauma on a person’s life was revelatory. I sincerely believe I will relate better to people in my life now that I have a better understanding of this. It was highly impactful for me. Well done.

The contrast between Oprah's personal traumas, and Dr Bruce Perry's professional experiences are a wonderful weave that gives us a lot of deep insights into trauma and ways of coming to understand how to help ourselves and others out of the weight of our earliest experiences.

Revisiting the potential effects of childhood trauma on personality and emotional development, for this reader revealed much about how I viewed myself growing up. Relearning the levels in which the brain processes incoming perceptions also helped explain why certain reactions persisted until I learned how respond to stimuli rather than react with old patterns of thinking or action. I listened to the audiobook, bought several hard copies of the book and am giving them to friends. Now to reread the text and underline.
What a powerful experience it might be to read and discuss this book with that trusted honest friend or or close group of friends with whom you have shared your past.
