About this audiobook
Known for its luxurious accommodations and bespoke service, the Hotel Louis XVI has been the most lauded boutique hotel in all of Paris for decades, attracting an international clientele of the rich and famous. Now, after four years of renovations and the death of its legendary and beloved manager,
it is set to reopen its doors at last. An esteemed group of loyal returning guests is set to descend upon the hotel, joined by a number of new faces who have managed to secure coveted bookings in the wake of last-minute cancellations.
Awaiting them all is the Louis XVI’s new manager, Olivier Bateau, an anxious man whose lack of experience leaves him unprepared. He and his level-headed assistant manager, Yvonne Philippe, both strive to continue the hotel’s tradition of excellence. But they quickly realize that anything can happen
at any moment, and on one cool September evening, everything does.
A successful art consultant arrives at the hotel for the first time since her brutal divorce, and is surprised to find new love—if she is willing to risk her heart again. A new guest contemplates ending his life, and saves a life instead. A couple finds their once-in-a-lifetime trip interrupted by a tragic
medical emergency, leaving the idyllic future they’ve long waited for hanging in the balance. And one of the hotel’s most high-profile guests, a French politician and assumed presidential candidate, holds a mysterious meeting in his suite that will threaten his life and legacy. Rocked by the events of this one
fateful night, guests and staff alike brace themselves for the aftershocks, as it quickly becomes apparent that more dramas and misfortunes are still in store.
Danielle Steel tells an unforgettable story about a famed hotel, where a few complications quickly escalate into a matter of life and death, changing the lives of everyone who passes through its doors.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Complications by Danielle SteelCentered around an Exclusive Paris Hotel. Each person who arrives is facing a (personal) challenge. Love, friendship, danger and scandal touch the lives of those who sign in. One thing for sure lives will be changed when they walk through the doors (of) Hotel Louis XVI.A contemporary women's fiction moving at a steady pace. Each character has their own complicated story, with a bit of mystery, danger, romance, and scandal. A good read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Complications by Danielle Steel is an enthralling tale about a famous luxury hotel, Louis XVI, and its guests. After restorations, the hotel opens to old guests even though there are still some bugs to work out. On the first night of its reopening, several "complications" occur that could easily bring down the hotel and its guests. Can the hotel and its guests survive this drama filled night?Danielle Steel is a master and has been for so long. This book holds up to her stellar storytelling keeping the reader intrigued from start to finish. I highly recommend this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Typical Danielle. Fast, easy read with a nice happy ending.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I can't say this book was riveting, but I enjoyed the premise of the renovation of an old hotel. I just wish she had actually written more about all the people that had gone there for years and years.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Complications by Danielle Steel was not quite what I expected from the blurb. I thought the story would be focused on the Hotel Louis XVI and its new caretakers. The story begins at the hotel where we are introduced to its new manager and assistant manager as the Hotel Louis XVI reopens are being closed four years for renovations. We are then introduced to a variety of guests that include a physician, a prime minster, an art consultant, and a couple celebrating their respective divorces. The nervous new manager is hoping for a smooth opening, unfortunately, two incidents happen that will change many lives. We are introduced to a number of people in the beginning (info dump). It did feel that we were introduced to a few too many people in the beginning (can be hard to keep them all straight). After a while the story focuses on the main characters and their storylines. I did find one storyline to be particularly disturbing and wish it had not been included in the book. Complications is a short book so no one storyline was looked at in depth. Gabrielle and Alaistair ultimately become the focus, but it is late in the tale. There is repetition of information especially regarding Gabrielle’s ex-husband and his new Russian bride. Complications was a quick, easy read with a satisfactory conclusion. The lesson in Complications is to live life to the fullest. You never know what will happen in your life, so we should not waste a day. My favorite line from Complications is, “Life is precious, and every day is a gift.” Complications is a contemporary romance with a high-end hotel, an attractive art consultant, an ill internist, a surreptitious prime minister, a jumpy manager, an unflappable assistant, and scandalous actions.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Complications by Danielle SteelDedication to her children and list of her works are shown at the beginning of the book. This author, I've read most of her works, tells a story and with the descriptions makes you feel as if you are there.Story starts and comes with history of the hotel that is being renovated in Paris and is opening that night after months of being closed.Internet and phones are still an issue. We learn of Gabrielle and she's by herself after divorcing Arthur as he has a new very younger wife and child.Patrick is there and meets his male lover...Richard and his girl are there-others think on their honeymoon. With phones not working there is no way to quickly get a heart attack patient help, another man is dead and so many have no idea what is going on.New owners of the hotel will not like the downfall of the first week of the reopening...Story follows them all: the heart attack patient needs approval from his spouse but Judythe is not his spouse...Alastair has just a few months to live, is there and knows a bit about medical things and took over with the defibulator at the hotel. He is there to just reassure her and help with French as she's American. Alistair had also spent some time with Gabrielle having a drink before he headed to the hospital.Over time and treatment Alastair has traveled to visit NY to see Gabrielle and even meet her daughters. They spend time together all over the country in art fairs for Gabby's clients. So real when they are visiting Paris again and jewel robbers are there...Love how this one ends, didn't see it happening this way. You are brought up to date on the people of that night at the Louis XVI hotel in Paris.I received this review book from Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine via Net Galley and this is my honest opinion.#Complications #NetGalley
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This slow-build book opens with an explanation about the Hotel Louis XVI, an exclusive boutique luxurious hotel, in Paris as it was before its 4-year long renovation. Then the author begins introducing her characters: a woman who is trying to survive the demise of her marriage to an older man who has left her for a woman who is the same age as her eldest daughter, a couple who found each other at the woman’s wedding to someone else, a London doctor who is in town to get a second opinion about a death-sentence diagnosis, and a French politician who wants to be the President, but has a career-ending secret that ultimately becomes common knowledge in one of the luxury rooms of the Hotel Louis XVI. Steel’s writing is very good and will keep you reading about her characters even as you’re wondering when you’ll understand why she wrote the book in the first place. The characters are well drawn and interesting, if somewhat stereotypical. The two main characters, Gabrielle and Alistair, find that in life’s complications are “both the questions and the answers, the hidden solutions, and unexpected blessings.”If you are a die-hard Danielle Steel fan, you’ll like (but likely not love) this outing. If you’re not a fan, you may be disappointed, but may find several tidbits throughout the book that resonate with you.My thanks to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for an eARC.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Title: ComplicationAuthor: Danielle SteelPublisher: BallantineReviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: FiveReview:"Complications" by Danielle SteelMy Opinion:'Complications' was just what this story was all about...the reopening of the infamous Louis XVI hotel. Will anything ever be the same for this Paris hotel, Louis XVI, after being renovated and under the new management, Olivier Bateau, and Yvonne Philippe, who is running it? What will happen after the guest starts checking into the hotel and the problems and drama occur? We have an American art consultant Gabrielle Gates, a divorcee; Alaistair, an internist with health problems; a man who suffers a heart attack; and a politician running for President whose lover is blackmailing. How will all of this come about...an emergency [heart attack], and a suspicious death that will take place, bomb scare, romantic love, destruction by rock stars, suicide, planned divorce and recovery from a divorce...that will throw management into quite a tailspin along with the hotel's Louis XVI's reputation? One thing is for sure...the reader will be drawn into the world of this 'Parisian Hotel' as the secrets with all of its drama start coming out. So be prepared for 'love, friendships, loss of life, overcoming trauma, and drama.' To get it all, you will have to pick up "Complications' to see how well this author will bring it all out to the reader giving them one heck of a good read. Paris, London, and even New York were extensively detailed, including well-defined characters with an intriguing storyline.I was provided a free advance reader copy from Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Books in exchange for my honest review on Net Galley.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is going to be a very short review.I have always heard wonderful things about Danielle Steels writing, but this is the second book I have read by her, and I must say I was not impressed. Perhaps her early work was wonderful; I don't know as I don't remember reading anything by her when I was young. With 179 books under her belt, including more than 146 novels, there must be something out there I would love! This was a short book, and it had a lot of potentials. It was interesting up until about the halfway mark, and then it just became repetitive and, to tell the truth, predictable and boring.*ARC supplied by the publisher, the author, and NetGalley.
