Editor's Note

Gritty Suspenseful Romance...

A woman who’s reached the end of her emotional and financial rope winds up living in a basement apartment in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach, which is also where many Russians — including those in the Russian mob — live. She meets a handyman who trades tasks for English lessons, and gets a job as a nanny to a wealthy family. There is a sense of menace threaded through the book, and that hint explodes into thrilling action as the heroine gets more entrenched in her various worlds.

Description

Lane Haviland can’t seem to catch a break. She’s dead broke, barely functioning as an adult, and completely alone in New York City. Her so-called “apartment” is a six-by-nine cell in a Brooklyn basement. And her new boss hasn’t ever met a personal or professional boundary she can’t bulldoze through.

Still, Lane’s determined to at least attempt to claw her way back to respectability. But she can’t seem to get her mysterious handyman, Viktor, out of her apartment – or her headspace. Maybe that’s a good thing: Viktor’s easy on the eyes, and that deep-voiced Russian accent is beyond sexy. But as he and Lane grow closer, he can no longer hide his connections with a dangerous criminal underworld – where secrets can be deadly.

I surprisingly enjoyed this book. The suspense kept me going. The narration is excellent , Marni does all the character voices perfectly.

Slow at times but it was a good story. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed the novel and it kept me looking for excuses to listening all the time. I wanted to go for walks or clean the house so I could listen to the tape. I finished it on a road trip and made the drive so much more interesting. I must admit I also admired the reader and all her different accents.

The story was quite okay but I think the author's story telling skills are terrible. First off I don't think this needs to be ask long as it is. It was bearable and fun at the start but mid way through it got boring and hard to get through. Just too much description of unnecessary things. And the Ending..... OMG it was so terrible. What kind of dumb ending is that? It just screamed desperation and I don't find it romantic or attractive at all. The narrator is also a NO NO NO..... JUST NO. Even though I already guessed the Hero's full story and found it predictable, the story still had a lot of potential and could have been way better and more fulfilling than it turned out to be.

I really enjoyed this story. The romance element was sweet, a bit PG, but it was more about the mystery. The more I read, the more I just had to know what the heck was going on with Viktor! I must admit, I started to suspect the truth about him, it seemed like the only thing that made sense, so I wasn't entirely surprised with the revelation. The supporting characters were all well written and the plot was coherent. The ending was a bit abrupt, I would have like some kind of epilogue to see where the characters ended up a few months or years down the road.
