About this audiobook
On a desolate road in the Oregon high desert, an apprentice mortician stumbles upon a horrific car crash--and into a vortex of treachery, long-buried secrets, and growing menace.
Melisende Dulac is a fish out of water after relocating from the East Coast to a small community in the Oregon high desert. But just as she's beginning to think of Barlow County as home, her life takes an ominous turn when she comes upon a grisly multiple car wreck and three shattered bodies on an isolated road outside of town. Near the scene, Melisende trips over a fourth body, that of a newborn girl lying a physics-defying distance from the wreckage. There is no one to claim the infant, nor a clear indication she was even part of the accident.
The crash offers plenty of opportunities for an apprentice mortician--but when the victims' bodies are stolen from her family's mortuary, Melisende is branded suspect number one. Then, Portland lawyer Kendrick Pride arrives on the scene on behalf of one of the victim's families--or so he says--and Melisende begins to see that there's much more to this enigmatic figure than meets the eye.
As the shadows gather and the mystery deepens, Melisende must race to find the truth--or be swallowed by the darkness.
Editor's Note
Dark and humorous…
Melisende Dulac is a newcomer in a small Oregon town when she stumbles upon a deadly car accident. Something seems off, and things get even stranger when the victims’ bodies are stolen from her family’s mortuary. “Crossroads” is an intriguing mystery that keeps you guessing, and it packs just enough humor to balance the dark plot.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5No, just a woman i angst. It was whiny and stomped on the same spot to long. I.. just can't get the wil to finish it. 1hour left. But I'm getting depressed listening to that voice and that story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this - the characters were interesting and not carbon copies (as in, the men weren't all studly, the women weren't all gorgeous). The plot hung together really well. I've spent time in that part of Oregon and loved the descriptions. One niggle - there are oregon-specific pronunciations which the narrator blew - Willamette for example. Otherwise, I liked the narrator a lot. Thanks for the listen.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a fantastic book! Great story, unexpected turns, interesting characters! I loved it!!!!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5eh it was just so-so. kinda boring. not much going on.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Good story all in all but the ending super drawn out and the main character was really hard to empathize with…
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story was very well written and the characters well developed. Highly recommend a listen
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Quite a captivating read and unusual plot. The narrator was excellent!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a fun, dark ride of a thriller. Loved the northwest setting, which was as vivid as a character itself. While I wouldn’t call any of the characters particularly lovable—except for the elderly aunt and uncle, of course—I found them all deeply human. Couldn’t stop listening. The narrator was perfect.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was hard to get into this book. The main character is well portrayed by the narrator but it is a dull kind of voice. Rightly so.
My mind sometimes drifted and I had to rewind and listen again.
Still I consider it a reasonably good book. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I was barely hanging on listening to the OVER the top descriptions and the unwarranted anger of the main character..but when the narrator pronounced descendants as "deck-a-dents"...I'm done.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Meh. I finished it. Easy listen while you work. Just ok

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I wasn't sure this was my type of suspense book, but not too far in, it hooked me to the very end.
Loved the references to New England. I grew up in MA, not too far from the Rhode Island border and after a time in Connecticut, and finally Vermont, the home of Lake Champlin. Besides being a great story, I loved hearing about the real Oregon! More novels please, and soon.1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Yes, the protagonist is hard to like, but I had to give 5 stars. I've been an avid reader for decades & this is the first time I've actually laughed out loud. My warped sense of humor really enjoyed lines like, "the stiff (the mortuary van) was meant for hauling bodies, not ass."

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I would have given 5 stars if there had been a juicy sex scene. Normally I would praise a book that left it out as generally I find them unnecessary, but I really felt that would have given her more feeling. She was so cold throughout the whole book. And it did say she enjoyed being touched in that way.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Main character keeps getting in her own way. Plus she's not clever, it's hard to root for her. The story has a side plot that keeps stealing the stage. It's frustrating because the concept is really good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good story, well paced and kept my interest until the end. The characters were interesting and real. Great sense of the place the book was set. Well worth a listen as the narrater does a good job of telling the story.
